SANTA FE SPRINGS -

Mayor Betty Putnam shocked the community Tuesday night when she announced her sudden retirement from elected office, and will be leaving the Santa Fe Springs City Council in the first week of December.

Putnam was just reelected to the five-member elected body in November 2009, and she has been a literal "institution" is this mighty influential enclave located in Southeast Los Angeles County.

"This is not a decision I've made lightly. But my family, like many of yours out there, has been seriously challenged by this recession and by some health issues," Putnam told a stunned city council audience tonight.

The retirement takes effect Dec. 9, 2010.

I really admire Betty Putnam.  I just saw her a couple weeks ago at a Special Meeting of the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees (hosted by Trustee Gary Mendez, who represents Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk) inside the Santa Fe Springs City Council Chambers.

Betty looked great and her enthusiasm and energy lit up the room. I know that the Santa Fe Springs City Council will do the right thing and hold a Special Election to replace her, even though she is "irreplaceable!"

Great JOB MADAME MAYOR! KUDOS!
