Popular Artesia City Councilman Larry Nelson, died today due to complications of cancer. He was only 58 years old.

Nelson had spent the last few weeks in a local hospital and his passing has left this tight knit community of 15,000 residents in shock.

Nelson was a popular, colorful figure in Artesia. He was first elected to the City Council in 1999, and had served as Mayor here on three different occasions.

Born in Superior, Wisconsin, Nelson joined the Navy in 1967 and married his wife Pat in 1970 and raised one son.

He moved his family to California in 1972, settling in Artesia and instantly got involved in local community affairs.

Nelson was a past Citizen of the Year, past president of People to People (a community charitable organization), past Parks & Recreation Commissioner, a member of the Pioneer Days Committee and Honoree as Ambassador of the Year from the Artesia Chamber of Commerce.

Larry was a down to earth, plain spoken elected official who always placed the needs of the average resident first and foremost.

He coined the popular pharse: "Everyday is a Good Day in Artesia."

If you have a special memory of Larry, please feel free to leave you comments here on my blog.

More details to follow.  Tonight, I hope you keep the Nelson Family in your thought and prayers.

This is awful news. Larry was one of a kind, and someone who will be remembered for a long long long time here in our beloved Artesia. Does anyone know when the Funeral is going to take place?

Larry was a kind and gentle man who made every person he met a better person because of the experience. We are all poorer because of this tragic loss. Our prayers go out to Pat and Chip.
