Los Angeles, CA:

Catholic Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio is expected to be introduced at a press conference at  10 a.m. today as the successor to Cardinal Roger Mahony.

The announcement will take place at the Lady of Angels Cathedral in Downtown Los Angeles.

The Mexican-born Gomez, 58 has been the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas  since 2005.  He has been appointed by Pope Benedict as coadjutor-archbishop of Los Angeles.  He will succeed Cardinal Roger Mahony, who is due to retire soon after turning 75.

Gomez has an impressive background, one that should suit him well as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church here in the Southland.  Ordained as a priest of Opus Dei and with degrees in philosophy and accounting, Archbishop Gomez has also been named one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in America by Time Magazine in the past.
