Famous Black authors from all over America converged on the Cerritos Library this afternoon for a workshop on how to put together the right "ingredients for a good read," and to tell stories about their works and journeys from concept, computer to getting published.

More than 300 book fans from all walks of life attended the three-hour fest that included workshops, panel discussions, book signing sessions, and good tips for "would be" authors.

Nearly a dozen famous Black authors attended the event, which was held in the Sky Room. Todays event was sponsored by The Cerritos Library, The National Black MBA Association, Inc. Los Angeles Chapter, and The Orange County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

Attending were authors Gar Haywood, Pamela Samuels-Young, Christopher Johnson, Whitney LeBlanc, Samella Lewis, Denise Nicholas, Ivan Houston, Gary Phillips, Attica Locke and Paula Woods.

AUTHOR: Pioneering artist and art historian Samella Lewis.

I purchased three books today...

"Freshwater Road, A Novel" from Denise Nicholas is a gripping account of racism and violence during the civil rights movement in Mississippi back in the 1960's.

Nicholas is an actor and writer and has appeared in numerous television shows, including on of my childhood favorites, "Room 222" and in the critically acclaimed "In the Heat of the Night."

"Freshwater Road" is published by Pocket Books and retails for $15 paperback.

"BLACK WARRIORS" by Ivan J. House with Gordon Cohn.  The Buffalo Soldiers of World War II.  $28.95 harback. iUniverse publisher.

This is the memories of Author Ivan J. House who was a member of the legendary "Buffalo Soldiers," the only Negro Infantry Division to fight in Europe during World War II.  House, who is now 84 years old, literally brought the entire Cerritos Library crowd to tears and laughter about this tales on how this book went from "real life" to published book.

The book has lots of real stories about the struggles of the "Buffalo soldiers" and is accented with photos, and maps and is a great guide to  historical buffs about WWII.

"BLACK WATER RISING"A Novel  by ATTICA LOCKE. $25.99 hardback. Harper Collins Publishing.

Attica Locke's "Black Water Rising" is a novel about a lawyer whoes most promising client is a low-rent call girl and runs his fledgling law practice from a dingy, run-down "strip mall." But, all that changes when he saves the life of a women from drowning on the bayou, and this novel is a gripping account opening up that "Pandora's box" when he least expected it.

Locke has written movie and television scripts for Paramount, Warner Bros., Disney, and 20th Century Fox.  "Black Water Rising" is her first novel, and she has already been nominated for a 2010 Edgar Award and NAACP Image Award.

How do you keep a people down? ‘Never' let them 'know' their history.

"If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated."

Dr. Carter G. Woodson 1875 – 1950

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

Marcus Garvey 1887-1940

"A tree without roots can bare no fruit, it will die."

Erich Martin Hicks 1952 - Present

Keep telling that history, our history:

Read the novel, Rescue at Pine Ridge, "RaPR", a great story of black military history...the first
generation of Buffalo Soldiers.

The 7th Cavalry got their butts in a sling again after the Little Big Horn Massacre, fourteen years later, the day after the Wounded Knee Massacre. If it wasn't for the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, there would of been a second massacre of the 7th Cavalry.

Read the novel, “Rescue at Pine Ridge”, 5 stars Amazon, Barnes & Noble and the youtube trailer commercial...and visit the website http://www.rescueatpineridge.com

I hope you’ll enjoy the novel. I wrote it from my mini-series movie of the same title, “RaPR” to keep my story alive. Hollywood has had a lot of strikes and doesn't like telling our stories...its been “his story” of history all along…until now. The movie so far has attached, Bill Duke directing, Hill Harper, Glynn Turman, James Whitmore Jr. and a host of other major actors in which we are in talks with see imdb.com at; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0925633/

When you get a chance, also please visit our Alpha Wolf Production website at; http://www.alphawolfprods.com and see our other productions, like Stagecoach Mary, the first Black Woman to deliver mail for Wells Fargo in Montana, in the 1890's, “spread the word”.

Peace.
