FROM CBS:

A professional skier died Wednesday afternoon after a fall at Squaw Valley, according to officials.

C. R. Johnson, a U.S. Open champion and medalist in the X Games, was skiing on the Light Towers area of Squaw Valley when he caught an edge of his ski on some exposed rocks, causing him to tumble downhill.

Johnson reportedly hit several rocks before coming to rest several hundred yards downhill. Squaw Valley officials said medical personnel arrived on the scene in minutes, but Johnson died from his injuries. He was 26.

Johnson was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, according to officials. The Light Towers area is considered expert terrain, and Johnson was known to frequent the area throughout his career.

"The loss of CR will deeply affect not only the local skiing community but skiers worldwide," said Squaw Valley's official statement after the accident.
