New Emails Reveal More Alleged "Pay-to-Play" in LA County Assessor's Office

" A small South Los Angeles County community newspaper has posted another 134 emails between Los Angeles County Assessor John Noguez and various property tax agents who allegedly worked to get tax reductions on some real estate. Noguez is currently on a leave of absence, but he is still receiving his full $192,000 annual salary. The Los Cerritos Community Newspaper, circulation 16,000, first broke the story of the investigation into the assessor's office several months ago. It had been investigating the story for about two years. Reporter Randy Economy said the emails are part of the criminal investigation into the alleged dealings of Noguez, his deputies and the tax agents. One from Noguez's deputy Robert Meraz tells tax agent Ramin Salari that checks on two property tax reductions are "in the mail." The checks were for lowered assessments and they went directly to the agent rather than the property owners, Economy said. He said the newspaper has some 3,000 additional emails it is still reviewing. Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley has called the investigation into the assessor's office one of the most important criminal probes into corruption in 40 years. A former property appraiser, Scott Schenter, from the office is already under indictment for allegedly falsifying records and illegally reducing property values."

Gerard Lionel Garcia-Barron: Disbarred La Mirada Lawyer Charged in Theft Case

LOS ANGELES – A disbarred attorney accused of practicing law while ineligible and unlawfully receiving client fees from multiple victims is expected to be arraigned this afternoon, the District Attorney’s Office announced. Gerard Lionel Garcia-Barron, 46 (dob 11/29/65), of La Mirada is charged in case No. BA396435 with 17 felony counts including grand theft of personal property, obtaining money, labor or property by false pretenses and unauthorized practice of law. The defendant is expected to be arraigned in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Deputy District Attorney Alfred Coletta of the Justice System Integrity Division is assigned to the case. The alleged crimes, which involve seven victims, occurred between July 2008 and January 2012. Garcia-Barron – deemed ineligible to practice law by the State Bar of California in May 2010 and disbarred in January 2011 – allegedly solicited clients and accepted about $7,500 from victims in retainer fees. The defendant purportedly met clients at coffee houses in and around the Alhambra area, according to the Alhambra Police Department. Garcia-Barron was arrested April 11 by Alhambra police working in conjunction with investigators of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation. The defendant’s bail is recommended at $160,000. If convicted as charged, Garcia-Barron faces a maximum state prison term of 7 years.

Las Vegas – This is my "must thing" to do in Las Vegas this week.

Evidence from some of Los Angeles County’s most notorious criminal cases – including the Robert F. Kennedy assassination and Manson murder trial – will be showcased this week as part of a crime history exhibit.

Are you kidding me?

Nope this public exhibit is for real, and will be walk down "criminal Los Angeles Memory Lane" and needs to been seen to believed.

But you got to head to Las Vegas to see it.

“Behind the Scenes,” an exhibit featuring evidence, photographs, video footage and vintage vehicles from homicide investigations spanning 100 years, is free and open to the public March 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The exhibit will be housed at the Palms Casino Resort, Key West Ballroom, 4321 West Flamingo Road, in Las Vegas.

“The Los Angeles Police Department’s homicide investigators have again and again demonstrated their ability to put together evidence on all sorts of crimes and certainly the more notorious killings in the city,” said District Attorney Steve Cooley. “We are happy to participate in this important historical exhibit by providing some of the evidence collected over the years by the hard-working detectives with whom we work so closely.”

Items on display from the District Attorney’s historical evidence collection include the clothes worn by Senator Kennedy the night of his assassination, weapons seized from the Manson family, gloves and a knit cap from the O.J. Simpson murder trial and firearms from the Onion Field case.

Detectives of the Los Angeles Police Department curated the exhibit for the 2010 California Homicide Investigators Conference.

Photographs and memorabilia from high profile cases in the City of Los Angeles also will be on display courtesy of the Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum. Among the cases to be highlighted are Marilyn Monroe’s death, the Black Dahlia murder, the 1997 North Hollywood shootout and the 1974 Symbionese Liberation Army shootout.

So, for the curious and avid true-blue Native Angeleno, you gotta check this exhibit out!

Seven City Council Candidates Face Pico Rivera voters this November

The Pico Rivera City Council election line-up has been set.

Incumbents David Armenta and Ron Beilke both filed, as did five challengers.

Former Pico Rivera Mayor E.A. "Pete" Ramirez, who served on the City Council for 10 years, and 17 on the El Rancho Unified School Board, is the best known of the challengers.

Others running include Luis Alvarado, an insurance agent and political consultant, Planning Commissioner Gustavo Camacho, Martin Morones, a government verification officer and Raul Riesgo, a marketing consultant.

Alvarado is very active in Republican Party politics, serving as Chairman of a group called the "Republican National Hispanic Assembly of Greater Los Angeles," and is a member of the Latin American Insurance Agents Association.

BEILKE UNDER DA SCOPE!

Councilman Beilke has been the subject of an intense investigation from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. His house, business and city hall office were the subject of a raid from the DA's Office of Public Integrity less than 2 months ago. No charges have been filed as of yet by the DA's office, and the investigation is still underway according to published reports. Belike is backing both himself and Camacho in this campaign.
