An off-duty Riverside County sheriff's sergeant from the Cabazon Station was killed when a Jeep he was driving off-road overturned on a steep incline near Anza and landed atop him, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Deputy Sean Bahash, 43, who lives in Mountain Center, was driving the 1978 Jeep on a rutted road, near State Route 371 and State Route 74, CHP Officer Darren Meyer said.

The Jeep overturned on the rutted road and Bahash was thrown.

He was crushed by the vehicle, Meyer said.

A passenger riding with Bahash, identified as Eli Higgins, of Aguanga, suffered minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital.

His age was not released.
