Off New Zealand —

A huge powerful earthquake has struck underwater off the Solomon Islands.  It took place around 10:30 p.m. PST.

There is no immediate word of damage and no tsunami alert has been issued.  The U.S. Geological Survey says Saturday's quake had a magnitude of 6.9. It was centered 35 miles west-southwest of San Christobal in the Solomon Islands at a depth of 22 miles under the ocean's floor.

The Solomon Islands is a country of nearly 1,000 islands that lie on the "Ring of Fire" -- an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim. About 90 percent of the world's quakes occur there.  A massive 7.1 earthquake his these very same islands just 2 months ago.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says it expects no major tsunami threat from the quake.
