One day after the voters of Pico Rivera elected a new member of its City Council, former Mayor Ron Belike was in a Downtown Los Angeles Superior Courtroom pleading not guilty on felony corruption charges.

The Whitter Daily News' Bethania Palma Markus has all the details on the court hearing in Thursday's edition.  Here is the on-line article that just hit the Internet.   I hope JUSTICE is done in this case.  No elected official, especially someone like Beilke should ever been allowed a "free pass" from the legal system.  The People need honest people on our local city councils and school boards.  Let's remember that during this legal case.

LOS ANGELES - A former Pico Rivera mayor pleaded not guilty Wednesday to felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from alleged actions while in office, but the district attorney will offer him a plea deal.

Ron Beilke was arraigned Wednesday at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center downtown Wednesday on two felony and six misdemeanor counts. Deputy District Attorney Sandi Roth said a hearing has been set for May 11 when Beilke can choose to plead guilty for a lighter penalty or request a preliminary hearing date be set.

"We'll be making him an offer," she said.   If the case goes to trial and he is convicted on all charges, Beilke could face a maximum of seven years, eight months in state prison and could lose the right to hold public office, Roth said.

Beilke's attorney, Anthony Willoughby, said his client isn't guilty.   "They might want to make us an offer but I doubt very seriously we're going to go there," Willoughby said. "I don't think he's guilty and I think we have the evidence to prove that."
