If you are driving "buzzed" or "loaded" or "under the influence" in the western Orange County city of Cypress, odds are that you are going to be caught, cited and probably tossed in the slammer.
In their continuing effort to crack down on those who insist on driving while intoxicated, the Cypress Police Department conducted a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on last Saturday night that resulted in nine arrests on various charges.
The checkpoint was at Lincoln Avenue at Sumner Street, and the goal was simple, to remove impaired drivers from the roadway and to bring awareness to the public of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
The location was chosen due to an increased number of DUI-related traffic collisions along Lincoln Avenue. The results of the checkpoint are as follows:
1408 Vehicles Screened
5 DUI Suspects Arrested (3 of the suspects arrested for DUI were also unlicensed drivers)
1 Illegal Drug Possession Suspects Arrested
18 Citations issued
10 Vehicles Impounded for 30 days
17 Unlicensed and Suspended Drivers Sent to Court
3 Arrested on other Criminal Charges
The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1!
Remember, it is time to stop driving under the influence. Too many people are being killed due to this ongoing problem. Congrats to the Cypress Police Department!

There seems to be a slippery slope fallacy in use here. You state, "9 people arrested, don't drink and drive...period" then later state that there are too many people dying from this behavior. I'm confused on your position. Do you beleive I shouldn't drive under the influence becuase I may get arrested? or because I may kill somebody? My concern is the where our society places the responsibility. As a comparison, the state makes prostitution illegal, drugs illegal, gambling illegal but does not provide the prostitutes ample job opportunity, the drug dealers any opportunity for education or job training yet expect them to just obey the law and remain in poverty. When it comes to Driving Under the Influence, the state give non-profit privelidges to associations like MADD and funds checkpoints like the one in your story, but does nothing to provide transportation to people who like to drink. Drinking was injected in our culture long before the automobile. The abstinence philosophy of AA has taken the reigns in our culture, directing the lack of acceptance and understanding for those who practice drinkiing responsibly and would take a paid ride home. Why aren't these bars held just as liable as the driver? What, does every patron of every tabern live withing walking distance? Are the bouncers checking for addresses with the age? NO. California is in debt, and as liberal as we are over here, the right wing business model has over taken our culture by penalizing our ability to entertain ourselves. If Mcdonald's sold a drink that debilitated your ability to driven and then you were arrested, how quickly would Ronald be sued? He has to tell you idiots that his coffee is hot, but a bar hasn't any obligation to get you home?? Take 1/4 of MADD's advertising budget and you have paid taxi fairs for every person who DOESN'T want to drink and drive. Then, you would actually have some legitmacy in your position of caring to make a change. But, instead, you congratulate and promote the money making scheme which actually doesn't SOLVE the issue. Good day.
