(Hollywood, CA) There is real "behind the red curtain drama" taking place this week in the race for the "Best Picture" Oscar... and all of Hollywood is buzzing.
"The Hurt Locker" is being engulfed by controversy in the final week before the Oscars are about to be handed out in a week on Monday, March 8th in Hollywood.
The critically praised independent film focuses on a US Army bomb unit in Iraq emerged as the HOT favorite to win the top prize at the 82nd Academy Awards. BTW...I haven't seen "The Hurt Locker" but plan to catch it this week. I haven't seen "Avatar" either....
Here is the lo' down on the brew ha ha surrounding the possible "disqualification" of "The Hurt Locker" from the Oscar race.
Nicolas Chartier, the films producer, has broken strict Academy rules concerning negative campaigning. WT Heck? "Nasty campaigning for the Oscar?" Come on. This has been taking place for eons...why is this just coming to light this year...and for the particular film?
Chartier could face censure from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He is alleged to sending e-mails to Oscar voters telling them to vote for his flick, "The Hurt Locker" instead of a "500 million dollar film" (in Avatar).
Chartier's emails were seen as a direct attack on his best picture archrival, James Cameron's, who produced the mega budget Avatar.
The Frenchman has since been forced to issue an embarrassing apology letter to Academy letters describing his email as "inappropriate and stupid". Gee, I wish a couple of politicians I know are paying attention....
"My email to you was out of line and not in the spirit of the celebration of cinema that this acknowledgment is," Chartier said. "I was even more wrong, both personally and professionally, to ask for your help in encouraging others to vote for the film and to comment on another movie. As passionate as I am about the film we made, this was an extremely inappropriate email to send - and something that the Academy strongly disapproves of in the rules. My naiveté, ignorance of the rules and plain stupidity as a first time nominee is not an excuse for this behavior and I strongly regret it."
So with the Academy take any action against Chartier and "The Hurt Locker" one week before the world wide mega movie celebration?
Some Hollywood insiders think that Chartier and "The Hurt Locker" could be withheld tickets to the ceremony or pulling the plug altogether and eliminate the flick from the best picture race. The deadline to vote for the Oscars is 5 p.m. sharp this Tuesday. So will the "Hurt Locker" be blown up before the first ballot is counted?
Other nominees include acclaimed science-fiction thriller District 9, UP!, The Blind Side, Inglorious Bastards, Up In The Air, An Education, Precious and A Serious Man.
