MORE ON CHILE EARTHQUAKE: IT WAS VIOLENT AND LASTED 30 SECONDS

Here are some more details about the 8.3 Earthquake that slammed into Chile around an hour ago.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador.

The earthquake hit around 180 miles southwest from Santiago, the capital of Chile.  In comparison, that is around the same distance between Santa Barbara and Riverside, and the area in Chile is heavily populated.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the center said.

NBC News is reporting that the shaking was violent, and the earthquake lasted more than 30 seconds.  In comparison, the earthquake that leveled Haiti last month registered a 7.1 on the Richter Scale.  All of the power has been knocked out in Santiago.
