Redondo Beach, CA
So check this out.
A former (and I do mean "former") Redondo Beach police officer has pled guilty to embezzling more than $75,000 from his very own police officer’s association.
What the heck? A Police Officer stealing money from his own Police Officer Association? What is this world coming too, my friends.
Anyway, Gene Tomatani, 40, pleaded to one count of grand theft by embezzlement on Wednesday in a LA Courtroom.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Norm Shapiro ordered Tomatani to return for sentencing on March 15 in Department 116 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.
Tomatani is expected to pay $75,388.56 in restitution between now and his sentencing date. The defendant had previously paid $12,000 toward restitution on Dec. 9, 2009.
Under the terms of a negotiated settlement, Tomatani is expected to be sentenced to 90 days in county jail, three years of formal probation and one year of Gamblers Anonymous. Gamblers Anonymous?
In the capacity of president and treasurer for the Redondo Beach Police Officer’s Association, Tomatani embezzled various amounts – totaling $ 72,388.56 – between May 2004 and May 2008. He also embezzled $3,000 from the City of Redondo Beach. WTF? How can a cop embezzle $3K from a local city hall? That City Treasurer should be fired...or recalled....or both.
Tomatani never contested the charges, prosecutors said. He was relieved of duty in November 2008, when the monies were discovered missing. In October 2009, he submitted his resignation while administrative hearings were pending.
Wait a minute? It took 4 years to figure out that this ONE out of control cop was taking bags full of loot and NO ONE noticed? NICE....
Anyway, Deputy District Attorney Paul Nuñez of the Justice System Integrity Division prosecuted this cae! Great going, Paul! I totally love District Attorney Steve Cooley. I can't wait for him to become our next ATTORNEY GENERAL here in California!
