Indicted ex-Los Angeles County Appraiser Scott Schenter has plead not guilty to 60 felony counts of fraud and unlawfully lowering almost 200 high end properties by more than $172 million on Friday afternoon.
Schenter was at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center on West Temple Street in a downtown Los Angeles Superior Court room and spent most of his brief appearance with his back turned to those assembled, including members of the media. Schenter, 49, with his dark brown hair slicked back, only spoke a few words during the first court appearance in front of Superior Court Judge Upinder Kalra.
Schenter was then placed in “special housing” after Kalra approved a special request from prosecutors.
Schenter, who worked from 1988 to early 2011 as a county appraiser, allegedly slashed values on multi-million dollar homes, condos and businesses in Beverly Hills, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. Schenter allegedly secured campaign contributions from the owners of those homes and business for his long time ally Assessor John Noguez.

What a day in the criminal investigation in the LA County Assessor's Fiasco....
Today....Former Los Angeles County appraiser Scott Schenter was charged with falsifying department documents and unlawfully lowering property values by $172 million, is due in Department 30 at 1:30 p.m. for arraignment.
Arraignment will take place in Department 30 at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, 210 West Temple Street.

Schenter, 49, was arrested this week in Beaverton, Ore. He is being held on $1.5 million bail.
“The magnitude of Schenter’s suspected betrayal of public trust is almost inconceivable,” Cooley said in a prepared statement to Los Cerritos Community Newspaper this week.
“We believe his actions are not isolated.”
Schenter’s arrest is part of an investigation launched last year by the D.A.’s Public Integrity Division into allegations that Noguez and several of his staff had reduced property values for wealthy clients of Ramin Salari, a tax consultant and campaign contributor to Noguez.

Two gang members convicted of Attempted Murder and Assault on a Peace Officer Sentenced to 30 Years Prison
In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 4, 2012, suspects Atkins and Butler armed themselves with handguns and walked up to the victims, who were standing in their driveway in the 14500 Block of South Keene Avenue in the unincorporated area of Gardena. The suspects asked the victims if they knew where they could buy marijuana and then without warning, fired several shots at the victims missing them as the victims dove for cover. During the shooting, a uniformed patrol deputy was in the area and observed the suspects running from the scene. During a short foot pursuit of the suspects, Michael Atkins pointed his loaded handgun at a deputy. Fearing the suspect was about to fire at him, the deputy fired several rounds at suspect Atkins, striking him in the arm. Atkins was taken into custody at the scene. Suspect Butler fled into the neighborhood and was taken into custody a short time after a yard-to-yard search. Two loaded handguns were recovered and connected to the suspects. The victims were not gang members. During the subsequent investigation by detectives from Operation Safe Streets Bureau assigned to the Compton Sheriff’s Station, both suspects identified themselves as gang members and confessed their intent to ambush the victims who they thought were rival gang members. Suspect Atkins also confessed to holding a handgun as he was shot by the deputy and stated that he thought the deputy was trying to shoot the gun out of his hand. Both suspects appeared in Compton Court on May 24, 2012, where they both plead guilty to multiple counts of attempted murder with weapons and gang allegations. Suspect Atkins also pled guilty to assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. They were each sentenced to thirty years and eight months in California State Prison.

Rudy and Ian: Its "complicated"
The race between Rudy Bermudez and Ian Calderon has turned into an official "comedy act." Okay. Maybe that is a tad over dramatic. BUT, these two have got "game" when it comes to this "slug fest" for a seat in the California State Assembly. Here is the latest from Los Cerritos Community Newspaper.... I been working on this for a couple of weeks. Hard to sort through all the "paper" and "documents" and well....
Don't forget about the third candidate in the race. Noel Jaimes. Yep. This will be "The Last Candidate Standing."

The race for a local California State Assembly seat between Democrats Ian Calderon and Rudy Bermudez has resulted in charges and counter charges between to two rivals.

The race for a local California State Assembly seat between Democrats Rudy Bermudez and Ian Calderon has literally turned into a steel cage match that now includes charges of money laundering, and hiding personal income sources, and the filing of complaints with state campaign regulators.
Did Assemblyman Tony Mendoza mastermind an elaborate money laundering scheme to skirt California campaign finance laws to help benefit the campaign of the candidate who is running to take his place in Sacramento?
Did assembly candidate Ian Calderon fail to report $60,000 in income to state officials?
State campaign reform officials have opened up an official inquiry to determine if Mendoza and Assembly candidate Rudy Bermudez worked in tandem to avoid campaign contribution limits after $50,000 in donations were allegedly transferred between at least a half dozen campaign committees involving at least four local elected officials.
Mendoza is a former Chairman of the controversial Latino Caucus that is comprised of elected officials in Sacramento who serve as members of the Assembly and State Senate.
This week Latino Caucus Chairman Assemblyman Ricardo Lara blasted Mendoza in a statement that has sent several political observers into a tailspin.
“Latino Caucus Chairman Assembly Member Tony Mendoza, acting on his own accord and without input from Members of the Latino Caucus, provided a recommendation to transfer $50,000 from Yes We Can, an Independent Expenditure Committee (IEC), to another IEC prior to his resignation as Chair of the Caucus,” Lara said in a prepared statement to Los Cerritos Community Newspaper.
