OFFICER STEVE JENKINS: LAPD K-9 Officer Shot in Sylmar Is Released from Hospital

No comments:
What's THE REaction:
The Los Angeles Police Department sealImage via WikipediaLos Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Metropolitan Division K-9 Officer Steven Jenkins was released from the hospital today just in time to spend Easter with his family and fellow officers.

On April 4, 2011, around 3 a.m., Metropolitan K-9 Police Officer III Steven Jenkins, 21 years and 11 months with the Department was in the 13600 block of Dronfield Avenue involved in a search for a domestic violence suspect. As Jenkins and his fellow officers approached the residence, a suspect later identified as 53-year-old Sergio Salazar of Sylmar, opened fire on Jenkins critically wounding him in the face and chest.

Jenkins was taken to safety by other police personnel and immediately transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel who had been on scene treating the victim of the domestic violence. The location was contained and SWAT personnel responded to the barricaded suspect. The gunman was later discovered dead from apparent gunshot wounds and two rifles were recovered from the immediate vicinity of Salazar.

Since that fateful day Jenkins has undergone a series of surgeries and continues to recover from his injuries. Officer Jenkins, his family and the LAPD expressed great appreciation for all the support they have received from community members and the LAPD family and friends. Steve and his family are extremely grateful to all of the medical personnel at both Holy Cross Medical Center and the USC University Hospital, who were heroic in their own right as they provided critical care for Officer Jenkins.

Members of the LAPD's Metropolitan Division, K-9 Unit, Sergeant Miles Taylor, Police Officer III David Wade, Police Officer III Linda Travis and Police Officer III Joshua Kniss were part of Officer Jenkins' search team the night when Steve was ambushed and shot by Salazar. They have remained by Steve's side throughout this ordeal as has Jenkin's wife Beth. Today, his team was steadfast by his side as they escorted him from the hospital into a Metropolitan suburban. "Today we are here to finish our call with Steve, together and we are going to get him home to his family" said Lieutenant Bob Arcos, Officer-in-Charge of the K-9 platoon. "This is a great day for all of us. These officers risk it all everyday for our Community and we are very grateful for the support Steve and his family have received", Arcos continued. Officer Jenkins loaded up into the black suburban, jaw still wired shut, as he managed a smile as best he could, a wave just before he was driven away with his K-9 partners and wife Beth. Officer Jenkins has a long road of recovery ahead, but on this day he has one single mission, to spend a thankful Easter weekend at home surrounded by family and friends.

Los Angeles, CA

Go figure.  Tom Schieffer, former Texas Rangers president and ex-US Ambassador to both Japan and Australia will be taking over the fiasco that has become the Los Angeles Dodgers.  He is also tightly wound with former President George W. Bush.

Oh, this is going to be a hoot to watch this soap opera pan out over the next several months....

Ambassador Schieffer was tapped today to "oversee" the day to day operations and purse strings of the Dodgers, according to Major League Baseball Commish Bud Selig.

Here is more on the new Head Dodger Dude:

John Thomas Schieffer, known as Tom Schieffer (born October 4, 1947), is an American diplomat who served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2005 to 2009 and as U.S. Ambassador to Australia from 2001 to 2005.

Dodgers Uniform ScriptImage via WikipediaSchieffer is a friend and former business partner of President George W. Bush. He is the younger brother of Bob Schieffer, a CBS News reporter and host of Face the Nation.

Schieffer's success in his law practice and business career allowed him to join an investment group, led by George W. Bush and Edward W. (Rusty) Rose that bought the Texas Rangers Baseball Club on April 21, 1989.

Having begun as only an investor in the group, Bush and Rose asked Schieffer to be the Partner-In-Charge of Ballpark Development in July 1990. Schieffer toured ballparks around America and successfully negotiated a public-private partnership with the City of Arlington, which became a model for cooperation between cities and private entities in development projects.

The Rangers and the City of Arlington announced the deal in October 1990. An election was held in January 1991, which sought the approval of Arlington voters. More people voted in that special election than had voted in the combined Democratic and Republican primaries the year before. The citizens of Arlington approved the agreement by a 65% - 35% margin. The turnout remains the largest in Arlington's history for a special election.

So, how will Scheiffer play in LA?

Time will tell.  Paging Mayor Antonio Villiaraigosa.   Wake up, Mr. Mayor.  Houston, we have a problem...

Joshua Ethan Thomas, 26 (dob 4-20-1985), of Long Beach was charged in case No. NA 088759 with 27 felony counts including two of attempted murder, arson and multiple counts of burglary, possession of flammable material, attempted arson and attempt to burn property. The complaint alleged a felony criminal threat conviction (NA 058315) in Long Beach in 2004.

Thomas appeared briefly in court this afternoon, but his arraignment was put over until May 5, said Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney, the prosecutor from the Target Crimes Division who is handling the case.

Long Beach police arrested Thomas on Wednesday after a series of fires and burglaries earlier this month. The crimes charged occurred on April 14, 15 and 16.

In two of the arsons, both of homes on April 16, people were inside sleeping when the fires were started. In one case, a victim’s bed was set afire while the victim slept, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

Thomas remains in custody on the $2.35 million bail recommended by the District Attorney’s Office.

The best thing about Easter Sunday is watching sports on the tube. Just watched the Heritage Golf Tournament on CBS Sports and Brandt Snedeker finally won Sunday at The Heritage, where he rallied to beat Luke Donald.

It took a final-round 64, and three extra holes, but Snedeker won. Luke Donald nearly came back on the final shot of the fourth hole of the playoff by just missing a 15 foot chip-putt.

What a awful way to start the most holy day of the year.

An LAPD Helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing this morning at around 6 a.m. after it was reportedly hit by bullets from a gunman or gunmen in a Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley this Easter morning.  What the heck is wrong with people?

Police dispatchers received a call of shots being fired near the area of Densmore Avenue and Saticoy Street.  When an Los Angeles Police Department helicopter was deployed to the area, along with several patrol units, a suspect began shooting at the chopper.  It was forced to make an emergency landing at the nearby Van Nuys Airport.
Area of Saticoy and Dunsmore that is the scene of the LAPD investigation.  Google Maps.

The entire neighborhood has been surrounded by members of the LAPD Swat Team, apartments and houses have been evacuated, and it tear gas has been reportedly fired into a location where one of the suspect or suspects are allegedly "holed up."

My heart goes out to everyone in the area.  What a scary Easter  for everyone in Van Nuys.

California Highway PatrolImage via WikipediaThe notorious Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) was a virtual parking lot for hours today after a Von's Supermarket big rig literally exploded going south bound near the Norwalk Boulevard/Civic Center Drive off ramp.

The accident was reported at 9:58 a.m.

What a mess.  I HATE this part of the 5 FREEWAY. It is a TOTAL nightmare for GENERATIONS.  I live around 3 miles from this accident site.  Lots of media helicopters. Residential traffic in Norwalk and Cerritos and Santa Fe Springs during this "shutdown" clogged our area all day long.

I want ANYONE who has video or photos from the accident site to send me a copy for my blog. Email to economy4abc.blogspot.com@gmail.com.Make sure you give me your name so I can give you proper credit.

According to information I obtained from the California Highway Patrol, the "sigalert" for the south bound 5 was lifted around an hour ago (3:30 p.m.ish).

Earlier the entire freeway was closed after the big rig ran into the center divider and literally "blew up." The charred remains of the truck are still being cleaned up and hauled off as I write this blog posting. Reports have been confirmed that the driver has been arrested for "driving under the influence."

This trucker is lucky to be alive.  As soon as his name is released, and bail details posted, I will update this post.

Where you on the 5 Freeway today? Hit my comment section below. Be safe the Easter Weekend. Don't drink and drive....PERIOD.  Don't be stupid.

Are we the only humans in the universe? Are we alone, or is there another "planet Earth" out there? It has been an aged old question since the beginning of time.

This summer "Another Earth" will have the movie universe clamoring.

Opening this Summer in July, this is going to be an "out of this world" blockbuster, my prediction, lots of awards coming to "Another Earth."

Here is the inside scoop on "Another Earth."
Actor William MapotherImage via Wikipedia
Actor William Mapother

In ANOTHER EARTH, character Rhoda Williams (actress Brit Marling), is a bright smart young woman accepted into MIT's astrophysics program. While driving one night she sees a planet and leans out for a closer look. She hits a minivan and kills a family. She is imprisoned for four years, and upon release seeks out the widower of the family, composer John Burroughs (Mapother).
Image via Wikipedia
The planet she saw is a mirror planet of Earth, and an essay contest is held where the winner can ride a space shuttle to visit it. Williams considers the possibility of visiting it to find out what kind of life her mirror self would have led

She aspires to explore the cosmos, and ends up on a universal journey into the unknown.

Another Earth had its world premiere at the 27th Sundance Film Festival in January 2011.

Reviews so far are great for "Another Earth." The film subsequently won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize for "focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer or mathematician as a major character".

Fox Searchlight is the distributors of "Another Earth" here in the massive movie market.

Back covering Norwalk City Hall....

“Norwalk is our city…”
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know how the song ends. Norwalk to be “proud.”

It was 40 years ago, when at age 11 (1971), legendary Norwalk Mayor Robert E. ”Bob” White told me that “you can take the kid out of Norwalk, but you can’t take Norwalk out of the man. Once you are part of Norwalk, it becomes part of your heart and soul.”

Fast forward to 2011, and those words have been ringing in my ear all week long.
I am BACK doing what I love most, being a “working” journalist, and I am back where the road began for me and countless others right here in Norwalk.
Cerritos College Falcon StadiumImage via Wikipedia
...and Cerritos College...
On Monday I began working full time for the Los Cerritos Community Newspaper Group, and with Publisher Brian Hews, and Editor-in-Chief Jerry Bernstein. This is the greatest job in America, and this newspaper is the heart and soul of our community.

My “beat” will be Norwalk.
I will be covering news out of Norwalk City Hall, Cerritos College, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, the Norwalk’s Sheriff’s Station, the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce, Little Lake City School District, and everywhere between Lakeland Road and into the proud neighborhoods located south of Alondra. I will also help get the word out about “everyday” life in Norwalk. Service clubs, churches, society functions, going to get you all covered.

I am no stranger to Norwalk. I started my career as a “working” journalist here in 1982, when at age 22, I was named the youngest city editor at the former Norwalk Herald American Newspaper. I took over the reins from former Norwalk editors John Tisdale, Steve Eames, and John Echeveste Sr., the original “Mr. Norwalk” back in the day.

After working with the Norwalk Herald American, I ended up becoming the Public Information Officer for the City of Norwalk. I was the author of the city of Norwalk’s pictorial history book, help launch the city’s local cable television programming, oversaw the Norwalk Now Newsletter and the Norwalk Annual Calendar.
I am looking forward to covering the new Norwalk City Council!
I also “know” politics, and understand how city halls, school boards and how colleges boards of trustee work on behalf of “the taxpayer.” My job here at the LCCN is simple, to report the “news,” not to “make the news.” Everyone needs to be reminded of the important “role” community newspapers play in our Democracy.

A great local community newspaper tells the story of the community day in and day out.
Ruben Vives. Local LA Times Reporter now the owner of a Pulitzer.

I am also keenly aware on how a “local beat reporter” can uncover the biggest news
stories in America, by just “doing his job.”

My friend Ruben Vives, one of dozens of local “beat reporters” for the Los Angeles Times, was awarded the coveted “Pulitzer Prize for Public Affairs” on Monday for his historic coverage of the corruption at Bell City Hall.

Ruben and fellow LA Times Reporter Jeff Gottlieb went to Bell City Hall one day and asked to see copies of “real checks” that were being written to the city manager, chief of police, city councilmember’s, “part time city attorney” and to dozens of other vendors and department heads.
Randy Economy
Ruben and Jeff were pushed aside by the Bell City Clerk, the Bell City Attorney and the Bell City Manager for weeks on end. The LA Times threaten to sue the City of Bell if they didn’t grant their “public document” request.

What they ended with was a Pulitzer Prize. I now get goose bumps when I think of Ruben and Jeff.

On Monday, after it was announced that they won the Pulitzer, Ruben and Jeff and every local “beat reporter” at the LA Times broke open the champagne bottles and made a toast, to the “next City of Bell story.”

Their groundbreaking work now makes all of us as journalists appreciate our “role” here in our community.

Great to be back in the hood, keep you posted.

I haven't seen JJ Barea play before tonight. Who is this guy? You know, the little quick dude, running up and down the court who looks like he just graduated from Jenkins Junior High in Van Nuys?

He is really José Juan "J.J." Barea and is still a young fresh NBA superstar in the making. He is amazing on the court, and off.

He is already considered to be one best Puerto Rican's who has ever played in the NBA.

He is also dating a former Miss Universe (2006)  off the court.  Nice, going pal. (she looks at least three inches taller than him...in heels...her's not his...)

Mark Cuban, the incredible owner of the Dallas Mavs saw something in JJ, and made him just the SEVENTH player ever to compete in the NBA from Puerto Rico.
