I wanted to make sure that all of my readers know EXACTLY where I stand on the historic election in Bell tomorrow.

I recommend that all BELL VOTERS cast the ballots for Nestor Valencia, and Mario Rivas for the full term election, and to voter for the late Miguel Sanchez in the Special Election.

I have been with the people of Bell for the past two years and Tuesday is their "DAY OF INDEPENDENCE." It will mark the beginning of a new chapter for this crime riddled municipality that is literally the size of a postage stamp in the heart of Los Angeles County.

Nestor Valencia and Mario Rivas are very different people but together their determination and passion to make Bell better is not only inspiring, but should also be used as "an example" of how to stand up and fight back against organized criminals like the now infamous "Bell 8."

I also believe that the People of Bell should stand UNITED and to do the right thing by PROUDLY SUPPORTING the candidacy of Miguel Sanchez in the "special election."

Miguel literally laid his life on the line for the Bell community.  His campaign was all about restoring "justice" to his hometown.   His victory on Tuesday will allow for a "new legacy" to be created in Bell and throughout all of our corruption plagued city halls.

Please vote for Nestor Valencia, Mario Rivas and Miguel Sanchez!

Talk about "dirty" campaigning beyond words, this one is for the books.

Today, Norwalk Vice Mayor Jesse Luera is literally fighting for his life at Cedar's Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after he apparently suffered a possible stroke while driving Sunday afternoon.

Today, Luera was "hit" in a campaign door hanger just hours before the polls open for three Norwalk City Council seats.

Luera, the veteran member of the Norwalk City Council, was involved in a "medical emergency" yesterday after a horrific car accident over on Rosecrans Avenue

Luera's vehicle lost control and "t-boned" another passenger vehicle.

Luera was rushed to a local Norwalk hospital, and was then transferred to Cedar's.  His current condition has not been released.

CAMPAIGN ATTACK
In a door hanger, that Norwalk voters received today (Monday, the day before city council election)  claims that "Luera - Ramierez: Wrong for Norwalk. Bad For Taxpayers." Three different media outlets are listed on the piece including a past posting from this blog, an article from Ruben Vives of the Los Angeles Times, and another report from reporter Philip Zonkel from the Long Beach Press Telegram.

Both Luera and Ramirez have been involved in past "sexual harassment" law suits that were settled out of court, costing taxpayer's several hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal payouts to the "alleged" victims.

Ramirez has also had his past run ins with law enforcement that resulted in at least one arrest for domestic violence allegations and other situations.

So, who is responsible for the last minute attack of Luera and Ramirez?

Time for the People of Norwalk to ask all of those "leading" opponents of Ramirez and Luera to "fess up" and "come clean" on this attack before the polls open on Tuesday morning.   In the meantime, I want everyone to pause and reflect on the ugliness of this campaign.   Vice Mayor Luera is fighting for his life this afternoon.  Whoever did this "hit attack" needs to "own" this for the rest of their lives.

Paging Steve Cooley?  Hello, Mr. District Attorney?

Hang in there Jesse!

Your thoughts?  Hit my comment section below, and please keep Jesse Luera and his entire family in your thoughts and prayers this evening.

Longtime Norwalk City Councilman Jesse Luera has been hospitalized after being involved in a traffic incident early Sunday afternoon.

City officials are still piecing together the details about what exactly took place.  But according to my sources, apparently the longtime Norwalk community leader was involved in a traffic collision in Norwalk after attending a church service and when fire and rescue personnel arrived they found Luera in "bad shape."

Luera,, who is in his late 70's, was rushed to Coast Medical Plaza in Norwalk and later transferred to Cedar's Sini Hospital in West Los Angelels, where he is located.

His condition is not know at this time.  But, my sources indicate that his injuries are "serious."

Luera is running for reelection in tomorrow's heated Norwalk City Council election, along with 13 other candidates.

As soon as additional information is available, I will update this post.  In the meantime, having known Jesse Luera and his wife Mary and his family since the 1970's, I want everyone to keep him in your Prayers and thoughts today.

Luera was first elected to the City of Norwalk City Council on April 12, 1994. He was re-elected in 1999, and served as Mayor in 1998, 2002 and 2006.  Prior to that he served as a Member of the Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District Board of Eduation.

Mr. Luera serves as a member of community-based organizations, including the American Legion, VFW, LULAC Council #2043, VFW Post 7138, American Legion Post 359, member of the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce, NALEO member, and member of the League of California Cities Latino Caucus.

He and his wife Mary have owned and operated Luera's Cleaners in Norwalk for decades.

In 1980 Mr. Luera received the Distinguished Service Award from Dodge Community College, Dodge City, Kan., for his service and volunteerism in the Norwalk Community. In 1981, he was selected Hispanic Man of the Year in the 34th Congressional District by former Congressman Wayne Grisham.

He was the Director of Social Services for the City of Norwalk for 19 years. Prior to his City Council appointment, he served on the Board of Education for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District from 1975 to April 1994. When he was elected to the Norwalk City Council, he resigned from the Board during his term as Board President.

Mr. Luera served as a Marine during the Korean conflict, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. Following his service as a Marine, he obtained his teaching degree from Emporia State University in Kansas. He held his first teaching position in Kansas at Haysville Jr. High. During this time he also attended Kent State University on a N.D.E.A. Grant. After teaching in Haysville Kansas for 8 years, he was offered a contract to teach in the La Habra School District and moved to California.

LA MIRADA - A horrific two car crash has claimed the lives of two La Mirada men who died Saturday after their pickup truck collided with a compact car.

Jason Michael Hagen and Gregory Esparza Rocha, both 30, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that took place at right around 1 a.m. on Santa Gertrudes Avenue at Lawnhill Drive.

According to both local media and law enforcement reports, the truck driven by Hagen at a "high rate of speed" when it collided with a compact car being driven by Salvador Fernandez, 31, also of La Mirada.  The car struck a tree.

Fernandez was arrested and may have been "under the influence."  He was taken to the Norwalk Sheriff's Station and later posted a $15,000 bail.  He is due in court later this morning in a Downey court room.  More details later.

Bell, CA

I just returned from an emotional and gut wrenching tribute to Miguel Sanchez who lost his life on Friday after a short battle with the flu.

Candidate Mario Rivas interviewed by KCBS News.
The young community leader is a candidate in Bell's historic city council election on Tuesday.  Tonight those who loved him the most gathered at his home and to Pray the Rosary, and then marched through the streets of Bell to City Hall for a tearful tribute and candlelight vigil.

Speaking at the vigil included Miguel's mother, brother, friends, and Bell City Council candidates Mario Rivas and Nestor Valencia.

Sanchez is running with his two friends in Tuesday's election.

Tonight was about keeping "Miguel's Dream Alive" to clean up his "fight" to clean up Bell City Hall.

Even though Sanchez has passed away, his name will remain on Tuesday's city ballot.  Hundreds of people in attendance stood in a misty light rain totally united in solidarity in their support for Sanchez, Rivas and Valencia.

I was taken back to hear the raw emotion from Miguel's mother, who spoke passionately about how her son and how he became "emotionally run down" and "stressed out" over "horrific" campaign tactics waged against her son, Rivas and Valencia from rival political action committee "BASTA."
Outside the Campaign headquarters from the Justice for Bell supporters of Miguel Sanchez, Nestor Valencia and Mario Rivas.  Randy Economy Photo.

Miguel's mother specifically mentioned BASTA political operative Leo Briones was being a "contributor" that led to the stress that she say's ultimately claimed her sons life at the age young age of 34.  In Sunday's Los Angeles Times, there was several mentions about the stress of the campaign, and how it took its toll on the normally "upbeat" and "positive" Sanchez.
A TRIBUTE to Miguel Sanchez inside his campaign headquarters.

Medical autopsy reports show that Sanchez died from a severe case of the flu.  He had also suffered from diabetes according to friends.

Funeral services have been set for this coming Thursday and Friday.  I will post the special details in the next day or so.  There was a tremendous turnout from the local and national media members.  Seen at the vigil were news vans from ABC Eyewitness News, NBCLA, KCBS/KCAL, Fox News LA, KTLA 5, Telemundo and several others.  Check back on Monday, I have lots of video  and will be posting it here via You Tube.

RIP.

My heart goes out to the People of Bell tonight.  My friend Miguel Sanchez, a candidate for Bell City Council passed away yesterday after a brief battle with the flu.  I am beyond sad.  How can this happen?  As you may know, Miguel was running as a candidate for Bell City Council, and was part of a "team" that included candidates Mario Rivas and Nestor Valencia called  "Justice for Bell."

I just got off the phone with Nestor, and to say the least, he is beyond sad over the passing of his longtime friend and running mate.

Miguel's death has left a huge void in "heart of Bell" this weekend.

"Miguel's passing has left a hole in the center of Bell tonight," Nestor told me.  I cannot believe this has happened.  Miguel was a great, kind, and compassionate man.

There is going to be a Candlelight Vigil on Sunday night beginning at 6 p.m. and it will wind through the streets of Bell.   I am going to be in Bell on Sunday and until election day.

There will also be a Press Conference in Bell tomorrow night to talk about Miguel's life and his passion for "Justice In Bell" and his community.

Please keep Miguel in your PRAYERS and his amazing family and so so many friends.

Also, Miguel was running as a candidate in the "Short Term Special Election" on next weeks Bell City Council election ballot.

I urge ALL BELL VOTERS to DO THE RIGHT THING and PLEASE CAST YOUR PRECIOUS VOTE FOR MIGUEL TO KEEP HIS MEMORY ALIVE!

TIME TO PUT POLITICS BEHIND US AT THIS TIME, AND TO DO THE "RIGHT THING!"

Ex-Raider SACKED WITH MURDER CHARGES!
Oakland_Raiders_helmet_rightfaceImage by Geek Tonic via FlickrLANCASTER – Former Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith and two purported associates have been charged with murdering a 31-year-old man in Lancaster more than two years ago, the District Attorney’s office announced today with the arrest of all three defendants.

Smith, 43 (dob 6-20-1967), of Fontana; Charles Eric Honest, 41 (dob 12-7-1969), of Los Angeles; and Dewann Wesley White, 32 (dob 6-2-1978), of Bloomington, were charged last month with murdering 31-year-old Maurilio Ponce on Oct. 7, 2008. They were arrested earlier this week.

Deputy District Attorney Michael Blake said Honest appeared in Lancaster Superior Court yesterday and his arraignment was put over until March 17 in Department A01. Smith and White were due in that court for arraignment this afternoon. Bail for Smith and Honest was recommended at $1 million each, while White’s was recommended at $1.05 million.

The defendants are charged with one count of murder. The complaint alleged that Honest also had a prior voluntary manslaughter conviction (YA 023880) in Torrance in 1996.

Blake said Ponce, from Lancaster, was beaten and shot several times before his body was dumped near the Antelope Valley poppy fields about 11 miles west of Lancaster. The case was investigated by the Sheriff’s Department and filed on Feb. 16 as a felony complaint for arrest warrant after investigators presented evidence to Blake.

Smith played professional football with the Raiders between 1991 and 1998. He was living in Marina Del Rey at the time Ponce was killed.

You got to love Cricket.

Americans just don't "get" this amazing game of skill and strength and bravery.  I caught my first cricket match when I was in Kingston, Jamaica last summer.  Incredibly interesting to watch.  You gotta have "game" to participate at the level of being some of the best in the world.  Crazy fun to watch.

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup is the tenth Cricket World Cup and is being played in Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka.   It is Bangladesh's first time co-hosting a World Cup. Pakistan bested Canada in one of the most watched matches of the Cup thus far.

I am following as many World Cup Cricket Matches on You Tube and on cable networks.  BBC Sports has coverage.  Hit and miss on other "world wide cable services."  Still learning all the "terms" and rules.  But one thing for sure, you gotta be tough and brave and have "nuts" of steel to play this sport.

Talk about a night of a couple of "queens" running around wild tonight in Long Beach!  Tonight was one for the books down at The Beach!

Maritime history was made, in Long Beach Harbor just around an hour ago when Queen Victoria and Queen Mary meet for the first time during a Cunard Royal Rendezvous.

At approximately 6:00pm, Queen Victoria sailed into Long Beach Harbor to meet Queen Mary, and the two ships exchanged whistle salutes amidst a sparkling fireworks display.

Wow.  I MISSED the big moment tonight!  Got any pics?  Send them to me.

Spectators ewwed and awwed.  Long Beach City Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal updated her Facebook Page some 58 minutes ago with this post:

"Elizabeth meet Mary...Mary meet Elizabeth. The fireworks are shooting right now."

Way cool.   If you live in Long Beach, get over to Ocean Boulevard for this mega royal meeting.

The Queen Victoria continues on her Panama Canal Adventure to Ft. Lauderdale.

This rendezvous marks only the second time in Cunard’s venerable history that a modern Queen has visited her docked sister ship; the very first-ever rendezvous was in February 2006 when, on the occasion of her maiden call to Los Angles, flagship Queen Mary 2 met her namesake, garnering international attention.

Upland Mayor Pomierski wins my Political Pirate of the Week Award!
Love this story out of the IE this afternoon.  Mayor of Upland John Victor Pomierski, as well as a Upland city appeals board commissioner, and two others are indicted on FEDERAL charges of accepting bribes and extortion.  Upland?  Man, corruption is ALL over at just about EVERY CITY HALL in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA these days.  If this can happen at the pristine city of Upland, could it happen in YOUR city hall?   Thank GOODNESS for an active citizenry who are standing up and demanding accountability and for "following the money."

Upland?  Yep.  Incredible.  Here is the official press release about the charges, the arrests, and all the details of this shocking new political corruption scandal EXPLODING in the media this afternoon.

CUFFED AND STUFFED: UPLAND MAYOR JOHN VICTOR POMIERSKI!
If you LIVE in UPLAND, hit my Comment Section allow this post and SOUND OFF!  Did you know that your Mayor was involved in seedy dealings like this?  Do you THINK this is happening behind your BACK at YOUR LOCAL CITY HALL?

Riverside, California –  A federal grand jury has indicted the former mayor of Upland and the mayor’s appointee to a municipal board on federal corruption charges that outline an extortion scheme targeting two Upland businesses.

John Victor Pomierski, 56, of Upland, who resigned as mayor last week, surrendered to authorities today after being named in an 11-count indictment returned yesterday afternoon by a federal grand jury in Riverside. The indictment accuses Pomierski of conspiracy, extortion and bribery offenses in a scheme the led two victim business owners to actually pay a total of $45,000 in bribes.

The second defendant in the indictment – John Edward Hennes, 54, of Upland, who is a member of the Building Appeals Board of Upland –  was arrested without incident this morning by special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Pomierski and Hennes are expected to make their initial appearances this afternoon at 1:30 in United States District Court in Riverside.

The Seal of the United States Federal Bureau o...Image via WikipediaAccording to the indictment, Pomierski demanded and received money from the owners of two Upland businesses in exchange for the performance of official acts in connection with Upland city government business and transactions. The indictment alleges that Hennes and two others involved in the scheme communicated Pomierski’s extortionate demands to the business owners and collected money on behalf of Pomierski. Hennes and the two other co-conspirators entered into consulting agreements with the business owners to disguise the nature of the payments and to protect Pomierski.

“The public can and should expect honesty and integrity from public officials – standards by which the mayor failed to abide,” said United States Attorney André Birotte Jr. “The allegations against Mr. Pomierski indicate that he intended to enrich himself by engaging in conduct that tarnishes all public officials. The residents of Southern California can rest assured that law enforcement is committed to uncovering corrupt politicians and seeing that citizens and businesses are not victimized by self-serving politicians.”

Steven Martinez, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI in Los Angeles, stated: “The citizens of Upland, like any community of taxpayers, deserve to be represented by trustworthy and honorable members of government. The evidence found in our investigation suggests that the individuals charged didn’t deliver on election promises, but fostered a ‘pay to play’ environment to benefit personally, while taxpayers paid the price and were denied honest services.”

UPLAND CIVIC CENTER:  Looks "cozy" doesn't it?
According to the indictment, members of the conspiracy twice demanded $25,000 payments – once in 2007, and again in 2009 – from the owners of “Business A” in exchange for Pomierski’s assistance in obtaining permits for the business. In exchange for the bribe payments, Pomierski, among other things, allegedly spoke to other city officials on behalf of the business and offered to speak with the members of the City Council when the business’ permit application came up for a vote. The owners of “Business A” were allegedly told to keep their arrangement quiet because Pomierski did not want the public to know he was “fast tracking” their application. One of the owners of “Business A” was cooperating in the investigation and the payments made by “Business A” to the defendants in 2009 actually consisted of money supplied by the FBI. In total, “Business A” made extortionate payments totaling $35,000.

The indictment further alleges that Pomierski demanded $20,000 from the owner of “Business B” in exchange for assisting in relation to legal action the city had taken against “Business B.” The owner of that business paid $10,000 to a member of the conspiracy, who, at Pomierski’s direction, gave the $10,000 to Hennes.
On June 10, 2010, agents with the FBI executed search warrants at Upland City Hall, Pomierski’s residence, a Hennes-owned company called JH Builders and Venture West Capital, which is owned by two other co-conspirators who were previously charged. In connection with the searches, FBI agents interviewed Hennes, who denied to the agents that he had previously met with the owner of “Business A” and Pomierski. In a recorded conversation on June 28, Hennes admitted to one of the owners of “Business A” that he had lied to FBI agents. In addition to the corruption charges, Hennes is charged with making false statements to the FBI.

Pomierski and Hennes are both charged in the indictment with conspiracy and extortion under color of official right. Pomierski is also charged with accepting bribes.  Hennes is charged with making false statements to the FBI. Extortion under color of official right and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right both carry a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. Bribery carries a statutory maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Conspiracy to commit bribery and false statements each carry a statutory maximum penalty of five years in federal prison.

If convicted on all charges, Pomierski faces a statutory maximum penalty of 145 years in federal prison, and Hennes faces a maximum possible penalty of 50 years in federal prison.

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Federal prosecutors previously charged two other defendants in relation to the extortion scheme. Jason Roy Crebs, 37, of Upland, and Anthony Orlando Sanchez, 35, of Rancho Cucamonga, the owners of Venture West Capital, were charged in a criminal information filed in federal court in Riverside on February 1. Crebs and Sanchez are both charged with aiding and abetting the demand and receipt of bribes. Crebs made his initial appearance yesterday in United States District Court in Riverside and was released on a $5,000 bond. Sanchez is scheduled to make his initial appearance on March 16. Court records show that both Crebs and Sanchez have entered into plea agreements, both of which were filed under seal.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which received assistance from the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office. In 2010, the FBI, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office formed the San Bernardino Joint Corruption Task Force to investigate allegations of corruption in San Bernardino County

Treauna Turner: Wheelchair-bound Woman Sentenced in Stabbing Murder of Dorsey High School Athlete Yolanda Kennard

Dorsey High School in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES A 32-year-old woman confined to a wheelchair was sentenced today to 16 years to life in state prison for the 2009 fatal stabYobing of a high school basketball player.

Deputy District Attorney Elan S. Carr, who prosecuted the case, said Treauna Turner was convicted on Dec. 8, 2010 of the second-degree murder of 16-year-old Yolanda Kennard, a rising basketball star at Dorsey High School in Los Angeles.

Jurors, who deliberated for three and a half days, also found true the allegation that Turner personally used a deadly weapon, a knife, to commit the crime.

During the afternoon of April 15, 2009, Turner, a paraplegic, approached Kennard near the corner of Buckingham Road and Santa Rosalia Drive in Los Angeles.

Turner was accompanied by three other women including her mother, co-defendant Pamela Johnson. Kennard was in the company of several family members and a number of acquaintances.

When Turner reached Kennard, Turner drew a knife that she had secreted in her wheelchair and fatally stabbed Kennard in the chest. Kennard was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

On the morning of the murder, Turner had threatened to kill members of Kennard’s family. Evidence presented at trial revealed that Kennard’s mother and Turner were rivals over the affection of
the same man.

“Treauna Turner’s jealous rage grew over a period of days before the crime,” the prosecutor said. “On that fateful morning, she threatened to commit murder upon the Kennard family and, only a few hours later, she did exactly what she threatened to do, ending the promising life of an innocent girl who had done nothing to her.”

Co-defendant Johnson, the defendant’s mother, was acquitted of assaulting the victim’s mother in the minutes following the stabbing.

PROVO -- Brandon Davies is the hottest basketball player in America today because he got caught having sex with his girlfriend and has been pulled off the number three rated team in America.

Just weeks before "Selection Sunday," Brigham Young University basketball sophomore Davies is being dismissed from the team because of an "honor code violation: for having SEX "gulp" with his girlfriend.

I use to be the Sports Editor at rival Utah State University back in 1981. BYU has one of the strictest policies on outside "activities" for all of their students.

This sacking of Davies has sent shockwaves through the nation, and this could be a "game changer" for BYU as they get ready to head into March Madness. Do you think BYU is out of touch with reality, or is this just the "price" you pay for attending the super strict university? Hit my comment section.

I think Davies needs to take his "show on the road" and head up to the Cache Valley and become an Aggie for the last two years of his college basketball career.  Ah, payback would be sweet.  THINK about it BRANDON.  TRUE BLUE AGGIES have a GREAT time in LOGAN....on and off the court!

Here is more on Brandon from the BYU website:
Mother is Linda Kathleen Davies ... has one brother and one sister ... lists Dwight Howard as his sports hero ... also recruited by Utah, Gonzaga, Utah State, Cal Berkeley, Washington State, Penn State and Santa Clara.

See, he was recruited by Utah State.  Go to LOGAN, BRANDON. You will be a ROCK STAR in Cache Valley in 2012!
