The field of candidates wishing to replace State Senator Jenny Oropeza in the 27th District is beginning to take shape, but this campaign may well be over before it officially begins.

Oropeza, who previously held the seat, died suddenly a couple of months ago, just days before the November 2010 General Election.  She was overwhelmingly reelected by the voters of this district that goes from the west side of Los Angeles, down Pacific Coast Highway and inland to Torrance and west Long Beach.

Oprah and Brian Quintana
So far, the big front runner in the campaign is former Torrance Councilman and Assemblyman Ted W. Lieu.  This district is overwhelming Democratic in registration, so Republicans have little chance of capturing this seat.  But, the GOP has fielded two candidates so far including Martha Flores-Gibson or Long Beach, and  Bob Valentine from Manhattan Beach.  Also pulling nomination papers from the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters Office in Norwalk is Democrat Mervin Evans of Los Angeles, and Jan B. Tucker from the Peace and Freedom Party.

GOP's Martha Gibson
Still sitting on the sidelines, is Hollywood producer Brian Quintana, who has deep pockets and tons of support from the entertainment industry lined-up.  Quintana ran for US Senate against Democratic scion Barbara Boxer and did garner an impressive showing against her in this past June's California Primary election.  (Gee, that Primary seems like a long long time ago, doesn't it?).

Anyway, Brian is still weighing his options and will have an announcement this week if he is "in" or "out" of this campaign.

Candidates have till January 3rd to file.  Stay tuned.

This race could be wild, or perhaps a real snooze festival.

New York City, NY

Gotta give a huge "shout out" to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg who just announced that his City government will remain "OPEN" on Monday, and that parking meters are "suspended."

One word:  Yippee.

"New York City was hit with a winter storm that was as strong as the meteorologists predicted. Our Sanitation crews worked through the night but road conditions are bad and there are service interruptions and delays on mass transit. To keep the roads clear for plows and emergency crews, I encourage New Yorkers to avoid driving. New York City government never really closes, and it won't today, but of course we understand that many will face travel obstacles. In addition to the suspension of alternate side parking rules, all parking meter regulations have been suspended for today, so you don't have to move your car or feed the meter."

Sounds logical to me, Mr. Mayor.  Hey, now, about that possible 2012 bid for the White House as an "Independent."

Dude, if you run, you got my support....and that is "no snow job here" from your Peeps here on the "Left Coast."   We love New York!

New York City and the East Coast is not having a good time today.  What a mess.  We have all been watching the "big ice and snow" storm to hit hard, and it did not let anyone down.  Just check out these two new "clips" from You Tube.  First of all, what are cabbies doing running around New York City during this mess?  Time to dig out.  Also, look for more rain here in Southern California this week.  Ick. Cannot imagine being stuck at JFK Airport for days on end. Worse storm since 1981.

Teena Marie, one of my all time favorite "Queens" from the Disco era has passed away at the young age of 54. My generation grew up listening and dancing for hours to her tunes in discos and music festivals during the late 1970's and early 1980's.

I recall the national "furor" that occurred when she first hit the "scene" and she didn't look the part of a "soulful" disco singer, due to the fact that she was white. Thank goodness we have mature as a society during the past 30 years.

I remember when she appeared at Studio 1 in West Hollywood, and at clubs in the OC with her singing partner Rick James. Ah, gonna miss Teena Marie. No word on how she passed. I just hope she rests in peace.  Keep on dancin....

Pasadena, CA

Now that Christmas has come and gone, get ready for the biggest party of the "next" decade to swing into Pasadena this week as Texas Christian University (TCU) and the University of Wisconsin get ready to square off in the 2011 Edition of the Rose Bowl and Tournament of Roses Parade.

I will be posting lots of great "stuff" to help make this event fun to attend, and to make sure that you can get in and out of Pasadena on New Years Day without pulling your hair out.

Remember, the key to attending any New Years Day or Eve event in Pasadena is "be patient." Relax. Don't get stressed, and be prepared to be around more than a two million other people who have the same "plan" you do.

So, keeping that in mind, here is a map of the famed Rose Parade route. Same Parade route used for the past 100 plus years. Print this out.

2011 Rose Parade Route.  From the Tournament of Roses.

Parking

Parking is always a problem for New Years in Pasadena.  Be prepared to pay anywhere from $10 to $100 to park your car or RV.  If you can avoid taking your car, or if you can car pool, or take public transportation, that is the way to go, go, go!  I went to one Rose Bowl and literally had to walk more than 2 miles to get from my car to the Parade Route.  Not fun. So, plan ahead.

Reserved Parade parking for automobiles, buses and recreational vehicles is available through a group called "Sharp Seating Company," who is the "official" seating company of the Tournament of Roses.  You can call them at  (626) 795-4171 and the city of Pasadena, (626) 744-6470.

Another parking company for the parade is a company called "Easy Parking Service."  They can be reached at  (626) 286-7576.

Like I said, paid parking is offered on a first-come, first-served basis at various lots and parking structures near the parade route.

Overnight parking on Pasadena streets begins at noon the day before the parade, for that evening only. All “No Parking” areas and red curb zones remain off-limits, and vehicles in violation will be subject to impound and a fine.  Again, not fun to have you car towed by Pasadena Police Department on New Years Eve or Day.  It will take you  HOURS to get your car back, if not days....  Been there.  Did that back in '94.
If you do get your car towed, good luck trying to find it in what tow lot.  Illegally parked vehicles will be impounded. Impound information: 626-744-4565.

Farmers Insurance Rose Float is called "Dream Machine.:
RV Parking

Reserved RV parking is available through Sharp Seating, official seating company of the Tournament of Roses, (626) 795-4171.  In addition, overnight RV parking is available at the Rose Bowl Stadium prior to parade day. Overnight RV parking is located in Brookside Park at the Rose Bowl Stadium. RVs must be completely self contained. No hook ups. Space is limited. First come first served. Reservations not accepted. For additional information please call 626-577-3100.

Limousines and Buses
For limo and bus parking information, please call 626-397-4220 or call Sharp Seating at 626-795-4171.

Monrovia, California

First of all, Merry Christmas.

I hope everyone is in the "true Spirit" of Christmas.  You know. The Birth of Jesus. Love. Joy.  Hope. Family. Friends. Singing. Fa La LAing. Gifts. Re-Gifts.  You know, all the really amazing things you "live" for as a child. This is the Super Bowl of Holidays.  Got it?

One of my favorite things about Christmas is Caroling door to door, and sharing merriment with my neighbors here on the East Side of Cerritos.  We are merry folk over here in our Tony enclave of Cerritos.  Yes Cer-Ritos!

But, a group of overly happy Christmas Carolers have gotten into hot water up in the Foothill snooty city of Monrovia. Yep, meet the "Extreme Carolers" from Monrovia. Full of love, and joy, and oh, by the way, they only sing at your doorstep between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. the morning of Christmas Eve.

These are my new heroes.  Singers who I am sure, will be appearing on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Conan, David Letterman (via satellite) and the Ellen Show over on NBC within the next few days!

So, meet the "good carolers that have gone really bad.."

They have a twitter account at twitter.com/mikediva

This group is directed and edited by: Mike Diva, and this video is shot by Christopher Julian and Robert Miller. Starring: Mike Diva, Sergio "Sexy sax man" Flores, Zabastian Amadeuz, William Gannon, Demetrius Curtis, Rodney Timberwilke and THE Freddie Mercury.  Yep, Freddie is back from the dead and thriving in "Rovia.

Wonder when we can get this group over in Bell for a late night tune-a-rama for the Disgraced "Bell 8," say around New Years Pre-Eve at about 4:20 a.m.?

Anyway. Love this group. Merry Christmas.

BTW.  Wonder what the guy getting totally pissed off at the beginning of this clip must be thinking today?  One thing is for sure, it is now a YOU TUBE CLASSIC with more than 110,000 hits in less than one day!

Shocking news out of the South Bay community of Torrance on this Christmas Eve.

Popular businessman Joseph Gosinski has been found dead at his well known Chicane Sports Tuning located at 1908 Del Amo Boulevard.  (Above you can see Joe via You Tube promoting his amazing business, and share more about his life).

Torrance police are baffled by the death of Gosinski.  He was best known for customizing Mustangs and other "vintage" sports cars for the past number of years.

According to various reports, Gosinki's body was found by officers who responded to a call about an "injured man" at the business about 1:15 a.m.

Police have very little to go on in this case.  They are calling this a "homicide investigation."  If you have any information about the death of Mr. Gosinski, please call Torrance Police at  (310) 618-5570 or (310) 618-5737.

According to their website, Chicane Sports Tuning is Southern California's premier high-performance Mustang headquarters that offers tuning, maintenance, performance upgrades and restoration services for all generations of Ford Mustang from 1964 1/2 to present time.

So sad that this took place, especially on Christmas Eve. Please keep him and his family and many friends in your Prayers this Christmas day.  Stay tuned.

Christmas has arrived here in America.  Christmas Eve, and I still have to get over to the world famous Los Cerritos Center for some last minute shopping.

We all love the wonderful story about if "there is a Santa Claus."

OF COURSE there is, and he is ALIVE and WELL and ready to visit us all this Christmas Eve.

Here is the remarkable true story of Virginia, Santa Claus, and hope that childhood memories live inside all of us this Holiday Season!

Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897.

The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church (pictured) has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.  His letter in the NY Sun Times is found below.
Enjoy the story and video clip.

Randy

Little Virginia wrote:
Dear Editor:
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.

Papa says, If you see it in The Sun, it is so.  Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O'Hanlon
115th West 95th Street,
New York City, New York
VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus.
He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real?
Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus!
Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

SANTA ANA – Oh man.  This is totally bizarre.  Call this one...."What was she thinkin?" or "Former City First Lady Gone Wild."  Your pick....

Brinda Sue McCoy, the former "First Lady" of Cypress, has been charged with seven felony's for shooting at responding police officers after calling 911 and initiating  a dramatic stand-off with members of the Police Department her husband Frank oversaw when he served as  both a Councilman and Mayor of Cypress.  Incredible.   What was she thinking?

Mrs. McCoy, 47,  is charged with five felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a peace officer and two felony counts of discharging a firearm with gross negligence with sentencing enhancements for the personal discharge of a firearm. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 58 years in state prison. The defendant is being held on $250,000. McCoy’s arraignment date and time are to be determined.

At approximately 7:00 p.m. on Dec. 16, 2010, McCoy is accused of calling 911 and stating she needed assistance. Responding Cypress Police Department officers attempted to get McCoy to come out of her residence. McCoy is accused of refusing to leave her house, pointing a firearm at her head, and then at the ceiling before pointing it directly at officers outside. Police warned the defendant that if she fired her weapon, she would harm police officers. McCoy is accused of firing the gun twice at police officers who were stationed behind two parked vehicles outside the defendant’s home. SWAT stopped McCoy using a bean bag gun.

As I mentioned, and as just about every active resident of Cypress is well aware of, Brinda McCoy is married to Frank McCoy, who served eight years on the Cypress City Council, including being mayor.

On top of that, Frank is the current chief of the Oceanside Police Department in San Diego County.  I can't even imagine what Chief McCoy is thinking this week.  My thoughts are with him and the McCoy family tonight....

I welcome a statement from the McCoy family and will post it here on my blog.  They can drop me a note to economy4ABC.Blogspot.com@gmail.com.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Rebecca Olivieri of the Special Prosecutions Unit is prosecuting this case.

So, time to sound off.  What do you think about this case?  Is "justice" going to prevail, or what is your "version" of justice in this case?  I will keep you posted on this case.  BTW.  I use to be the Public Information Officer for the City of Cypress back in the mid 1980's.  Cypress is a great community, and I can imagine that lots of people are concerned about this situation.  All I can say is, that GOODNESS no MEMBERS of the Cypress Police Department was injured in this case.

Law enforcement has announced the arrest of two men in the murder case of Comtpon resident Julio Hernandez who was shot a killed this past Saturday in Long Beach.

Juan Francisco Moreno, 30, of San Pedro and Paul James Moore, 34, of Long Beach were arrested without incident on Wednesday and will be charged with the murder of Hernandez.
If your recall, the murder of Hernandez took place last Saturday, December 18, 2010, at approximately 5:30 a.m..  Members of the Long Beach Police Department were called to the 1300 block of Raymond Avenue regarding "a male adult who had been shot in the torso while inside a residence."

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics transported Hernandez to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased several hours later.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Moreno and Moore had come to the residence and were allowed inside by the victim Hernandez.

Then, according to police records, there was a verbal dispute, and one of the men produced a gun, shot the victim, and both suspects fled.

On Wednesday, detectives obtained arrests warrants for the two suspects, and both were taken into custody. No motive for the killing.  Stay tuned.  Bail has been set at $1 Million each.
