Australia-
Man, more problems for Qantas Airlines.
After a rough couple of days of operation that saw one plane engine fall off in mid flight, and another plane flight aborted 24 hours after that first incident, Qantas is grounding their famed "A380's" fleet until further notice.  Tonight passengers are scrambling to make other arrangements.
This story is hitting close to home for me.  We have one of very best friends staying with us from Melbourne, Australia for the next several weeks.  She arrived here around 10 days ago, and two days later is when the Qantas problems really took off.

Here is the official notice from Qantas tonight:
"Qantas is continuing an intensive inspection program on all Rolls-Royce engines in its A380 fleet, but operations will be recovered and significant disruptions to passengers should cease within the next 24 hours.
As part of their investigation, Qantas engineers have removed a number of engines to undertake further examination.

Engineers have been investigating the engines in detail and how their components and design perform under operational conditions, as opposed to the original out-of-factory expectations.

The focus of the investigation has been narrowed to the possibility of an oil leakage in the relevant turbine area. However, investigations on other areas of the engine are continuing, in order to rule out other potential issues.

These inspections are taking place in Sydney and Los Angeles with Qantas engineers working closely with Rolls-Royce, as well as the aircraft manufacturer Airbus and Australian regulators.

Qantas will not return its A380 fleet to service until confident the issues have been identified and resolved. At this stage, Qantas does not expect to operate the A380 fleet for at least another 72 hours.

All Qantas aircraft are being utilised to ensure minimal disruption to scheduled international services. Qantas has scheduled extra services from Los Angeles to ensure passengers affected by the suspension of A380 operations are returned to Australia as soon as possible.

The backlog of passengers in Los Angeles is expected to be cleared by last departure from Los Angeles on 8 November with all passengers accommodated on specially chartered relief flights and across scheduled services. A Special Assistance Team has been deployed to Los Angeles to assist.

Hotel accommodation, meals and international phone calls have been provided for passengers impacted by the A380 disruptions.  Qantas will provide compensation for customers who have experienced delays.

Regular updates will continue to be available on www.qantas.com

If you are "stuck" in Los Angeles because of the current Qantas situation, hit my comment section and tell me your thoughts.

NO DEMOCRACY IN MYANMAR!: Western states dismiss Burma's election

YANGON, BURMA - NOVEMBER 06: Burmese people r...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Riding a tri-cycle to work in Yangoon, Myanmar (Burma) on Sunday

I wanted to post this but very important post from the BBC regarding this past weekends National Election in Myanmar (aka: Burma).

I have followed the developments of this country day in and day out for the past three plus years.  It is an outrage that this country is allowed to get away with this in this day and age.  I hope President Obama will take action and get the good people of Burma a new lease on life.  Obama is over in India and Asia for the next week, and I pray that he will be able to use his power and "star appeal" to turn Burma into a true "Democracy!"

My "brother" Martin is here from Burma...and my heart breaks for the people of this nation.

Let Freedom Ring!
Randy Economy

Western powers have dismissed Burma's first general election for two decades, describing it as neither free nor fair.

From the BBC

During a visit to India, US President Barack Obama said "for too long the people of Burma have been denied the right to determine their own destiny".

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday's election would "mean the return to power of a brutal regime".  Two parties linked to the military are expected to dominate the poll. The largest opposition group boycotted it.

Some voters told the BBC they could not vote in private, while opposition groups alleged that many state employees had been pressured to vote in advance for the main pro-military party.

Reports from Burma's largest city, Rangoon, suggest turnout was low.

Burmese voters last got a chance to cast their ballots in 1990, when they overwhelmingly backed the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi (seen above).

But the ruling generals never allowed the NLD to take power and detained Ms Suu Kyi.
A new constitution enacted in 2008. The election was the culmination of the generals' stated aim to create a "discipline-flourishing democracy" that will return Burma to civilian rule. However, critics say they are a sham.
A quarter of seats in the two new chambers of parliament will be reserved for the military.

Any constitutional change will require a parliamentary majority of more than 75% - meaning that the military will retain a casting vote. Key ministerial posts will be held by serving generals.

The two main parties contesting the polls - the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and the National Unity Party (NUP) - also have close ties to the military, with both led by former generals who have given up their ranks.

The NLD was forcibly disbanded after it said it was not participating because of laws which banned Ms Suu Kyi from taking part.

President Obama, speaking on Sunday during a visit to India, said the elections would "be anything but free and fair".

"For too long the people of Burma have been denied the right to determine their own destiny."

In a statement released by the White House afterwards, Mr Obama said the vote had not met "any of the internationally accepted standards associated with legitimate elections", and called for the immediate release of Ms Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners in Burma.

The UK said the election results were "already a foregone conclusion".

COMMUNITY MEETING: When's that "train" to "nowhere" coming? Cerritos to host meeting to talk "trains" and "bus paths" along Pacific Electric Cooridor on Tuesday, November 23rd

Cerritos, CA
Speaking of a massive waste of taxpayer money.
How many decades and how many  millions of REAL public dollars have already been spent to "study" and "plan" and "coordinate" this so-called "Orange Line" transportation system here in Southern California.
$10 million?  $50 million?  Who really knows.  All I know is that the "train to nowhere" road show is coming to Cerritos on Tuesday, November 23rd, and everyone needs to attend this "dog and pony show."
Here is a release that was posted on the City of Cerritos website, that I want to make sure everyone gets a change to gaze at.  See my comments at the below the "official meeting details."
"A community meeting for the Pacific Electric Corridor Alternatives Analysis will be held on Tuesday, November 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cerritos Park East Community Center.
The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is leading a collaborative study on ways to use the historic Pacific Electric right-of-way to connect downtown Los Angeles, the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center and communities in between. The collaboration involves 21 cities and several county and regional agencies. The community meetings are being held to obtain area residents' input on the following issues:
  • Which mode of transit matches the local community's travel needs, desires and values?
  • How will a new transit system stimulate local economic development?
  • How will engineering and environmental challenges be met?
  • Where should stations be located?
In addition, participants will discuss routing options, station locations, and the benefits, impacts and trade-offs of each of the choices listed below.
At this time, the following transportation alternatives have been identified and are being evaluated based on community values and concerns:
  • No build: complete only the transportation improvements that have available funding;
  • Transportation systems management: maximize the use of existing transportation options and complete minor improvements;
  • Bus rapid transit: provide high-speed bus service in dedicated lanes along the former Pacific Electric right-of-way between Los Angeles and Orange counties, and connecting north to Downtown Los Angeles on city streets with signal priority or within freeway carpool lanes;
  • Streetcar: build a light rail-like system similar to the one being considered by the City of Santa Ana;
  • Light rail transit: build a rail system similar to the Metro Gold and Blue lines in Los Angeles County that would serve local and regional trips;
  • Multiple unit: build a self-powered rail system similar to the Sprinter service in northern San Diego County that would serve local and regional trips; and
  • High speed rail: build a grade-separated high-speed rail system similar to Amtrak or Maglev that would serve regional trips.
For more information, visit www.pacificelectriccorridor.com

My opine:

Okay, here is the DEAL. This project has been a political boondoggle for more than 20 years. Our local elected city council members and city staffers have traveled on our dime all over the world in luxury trips to "study" this for eons.   Time for accountability.  Some people have made Millions on this ONE project and nothing will ever come from it.   This is a "pipe dream" and now we need to start calling those elected officials on the carpet who have foisted this on us for decades.
I hope my friends at NBC 4 News, and the Los Angeles Times, and Eyewitness News can attend this meeting, and every government "watchdog" also needs to suit-up and show up.  I want everyone to attend this meeting, and start holding our "local elected officials" accountable.  Ask the tough questions.  Enough of this "gravy train."
The next round of local campaigns begin in a week. Wake up Taxpayers!

The fairy tale has ended, and the gal of the year Zenyatta has lost the Breeders Cup Classic by a nose to the horse called "Blame."

What a heartbreaking race of a lifetime tonight in Kentucky. I watched and hoped and prayed that Zenyatta would have come through. But in the end, it was Blame! who beat Miss Z at the wire.

From You Tube:
"Oscar Grant Protest: OPD no dispersal order."
Rachel Jackson speaks to the few official press people left just before police began making arrests. At this moment no one knew where they could go, how to get out nor what was going to happen. Loud speaker announcements were made that the area was declared a crime scene. There was never any indication to disperse, no dispersal order given, no declaration of martial law or anything like that at all. No one was allowed to leave once the police penned people in. Prior to that people were marching toward Fruitvale BART peacefully on city streets, they were met with riot gear police every few blocks until they were trapped in a culd-e-sac type neighborhood.

Oakland, California  --

It is just plain ugly in Oakland tonight. Yep.  No Justice No Peace. People are beginning to hit the streets. Arrests are being made. Some are calling it a "riot ready to explode."  Oakland is a tender box on edge. This could be a very long weekend for law enforcement in the Bay area.

Here is the scoop.

On Friday authorities in Oakland said unruly marchers were "tearing up the city" as they protested a two-year sentence for a former transit police officer convicted for killing an unarmed man.CNN is reporting that protesters were throwing rocks, bottles trash, and ripping up fences late Friday.

Oakland Chief of Police Anthony Batts, the ex-husband of Long Beach Rep. Laura Richardson Batts, said the city is "out of control."  Batts became the Chief of Police in Oakland earlier this year when he left his post as Chief here in Long Beach.

So, here is what is taking place up in the Bay Area.
  • A peaceful and organized expression of grief has turned into a "small number of people" acting out in a violent manner, Batts told reporters.
  • Somoeone ripped a gun from a police officer's holster, and another officer was hit by a car, according to Batts.  "I want to be clear that people have a right to assemble, a right to protest and a right to free speech," the police chief said.  "But people do not have a right to tear this city up. Oakland already has a lot of pain, and it's not fair. This city has been torn up too many times."
  • 150 people will be arrested by the end of the night and charged with everything from "unlawful assembly and failure to disperse" to much more serious crimes.

Like many of my readers, I use to live in the heart of Los Angeles during the "Rodney King Riots" and it took the people of Los Angeles more than a decade to recover from that week long series of riots that turned deadly.  I hope the People of Oakland will remain calm.  Remember, the world is watching.

This trial should be a humdinger.  I hope ALL of the MEDIA in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA can cover this trial when it finally starts.  It would be an injustice to "sweep" this under the media carpet.  This could be as entertaining as watching the "Bell 8" trial....

Is the Mustard coming off the Hot Dog King?

Trial continued for ex Pico Rivera mayor

By Ruby Gonzales
Whittier Daily News

LOS ANGELES - A new trial date was set for former Pico Rivera mayor and former councilman Ronald Beilke.

Beilke was in a Los Angeles Superior courtroom Thursday for a scheduled trial that has been continued to Nov. 10, according to the prosecution and the defense.

He's been charged with one count of felony perjury, one count of felony conflict of interest and three counts of misdemeanor conflict of interest. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has refused a plea deal.

According to court documents, the perjury charge stems from Beilke signing an allegedly dishonest 2008 economic interest form, while the felony conflict of interest was for voting on a contract with the Krikorian Theater while receiving gifts from the company.

The misdemeanor charges are for voting on a road improvement project close to his fast food restaurant which prosecutors allege benefited him financially.
