LOS ANGELES – Five alleged members of a theft ring that targeted homes of celebrities have been arraigned on an indictment charging them with conspiracy, burglary and receiving stolen property.

Indicted are Nicholas Frank Prugo, 19; Rachel Lee, 19; Diana Tamayo, 20; Courtney Leigh Ames, 19; and Roy Lopez, Jr., 28.

Each defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg last Friday before the holiday weekend.

The defendants were ordered to return to Department 106 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center on Aug. 12.

The indictment charges the defendants with one count each of conspiracy to commit burglary.

Additionally, Prugo faces seven counts of first degree residential burglary. Lee is charged with two counts each of first degree residential burglary and receiving stolen property.

Ames is charged with one count of first degree residential burglary and two counts of receiving stolen property. Tamayo and Lopez each face one count each of first degree residential burglary and receiving stolen property.

Between September 2008 and August 2009, the crew allegedly netted more than $3 million in jewelry, designer clothes and accessories from the homes of Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan, Brian Austin-Green and Paris Hilton, among other celebrities.

Defendant Lopez was remanded into custody today for failure to post a bond of $90,000. The remaining co-defendants were expected to post indictment bonds. Bail for the defendants ranged between $200,000 and $90,000.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Sarika Kim.

The Los Angeles County Grand Jury will be packed full of staff members for Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon on Wednesday to determine exactly where the councilman and former state legislator calls "home."

The probe into where Alarcon actually lives has been investigated for months.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out, trust me.  Six of his employees have been ordered to appear before the Los Angeles County Grand Jury on Wednesday, including his Chief Staff Saeed Ali.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley's office received permission back in January to search two homes owned by Alarcon's wife, Flora Montes de Oca — one on Nordhoff Street in Panorama City, the other on Sheldon Street in Sun Valley.

Alarcon contends that he resides at the house on Nordhoff but moved his family to another address, one in the district represented by Councilman Paul Krekorian, after a transient broke into his home and changed the locks on the doors.

Alarcon must be shaking in his boots tonight....

Alarcon said he has complied with the law. Stay tuned.  It always amazes me when a politician thinks that they can actually get away with these types of most basic rules.  Do you really know where your elected official lives?  It would blow your mind to actually know the truth on many of the bad political boyz and girlz.

It was suppose to be a night of celebration.

It turned out to be a hellish nightmare for one local Southern California community at an annual fireworks show last night.

A woman was fatally struck by an out of control vehicle and her three children were seriously injured and four other people were also injured at the City of Valencia Fireworks Show on Sunday night.

Valencia is located around 30 miles northwest of Downtown Los Angeles.

The horrific accident involved two cars and took place outside the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall at McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard about 9:50 p.m. last night.

The impact of the collision caused one of the vehicles to jump a curb and strike a crowd of pedestrians, according to local law enforcement officials.  I cannot imagine the shock and scene of those who witnessed this accident, and today my heart goes out to those involved.

Matilda Gamica, 43, died at the scene, and one of her sons was airlifted to Children's Hospital with a head injury described as critical. Gamica's two other children, 6 and 12 years old, suffered unspecified injuries described as non-life-threatening, as did four other pedestrians.

All six are now at the Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital.

The names of the drivers involved were not immediately available.  As soon as the names are released, and an update given on the victims, I will post it here on the Blog.

Also, members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are asking to community to pass the word about this tragic situation, and are seeking witnesses of the crash to call Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station at (661) 255-1121.

Cerritos, CA

We celebrated a great 4th of July here in my hometown of Cerritos, CA on Sunday.  I had a total blast.  This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE HOLIDAY, and this one was a great time with great friends, and family and the people I love the MOST....my "peeps" here in Cerritos.

I wanted to upload this fireworks clip. This is my FIRST YOU TUBE VIDEO ever uploaded. (Yeah, who knew. I'm a little slow on the trigger so to speak...so cut me some slack.)
...watch the last 30 seconds. No, Cerritos didn't burn down after this show.

Don't believe "EVERYTHING" you see on You Tube.  Happy Birthday America!  Let Freedom Ring!

More than 250 firefighters are on scene at a wild fire that broke out on Fourth of July at the Irvine Regional Park.  As of 1 a.m. Friday, Orange County firefighters said at least 100 acres have burned and containment has been made.  Officials are confident that they are getting the "upper hand" on this fire and that no one has been injured thus far.

The fire was reported at 3:16 p.m. Sunday afternoon over on Jamboree Road and Chapman Avenue. No structures are currently threatened and it is still unclear just how the fire started.

Remember "fire season" is arriving in Southern California.

Be careful, and be alert of your surroundings.

Los Angeles, CA

Today, I wanted to pass along my thoughts and prayers to my longtime friend Julie Butcher and her husband Don who laid their son Matthew Butcher to rest on Saturday.

Julie is the leader of the Service Employee International Union Local 721 here in Southern California, and someone who is passionate about worker rights.

Today, the Butcher Family is still trying to make sense of the murder of their beloved son Matthew who was brutally shot and killed on June 24th in an Echo Park Pot Dispensary.

Julie posted this on her Facebook Page today:

"Matt was shot and murdered June 24th at 4:14 in the afternoon, when armed robbers broke into the Echo Park medical marijuana shop in which he was working as a clerk and book keeper. He was forced onto his knees and shot in the head.

Matt was a kind, intelligent, quiet young man, who was extraordinarily loved by his parents Don & Julie Butcher & his younger brother Steven.

Matt had an extensive list of friends and loved ones who miss him dearly.

All abhor the senseless violence. RIP."

A Memorial Service was held at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena on Saturday and was attended by hundreds of friends of Matt as well as many elected officials.

The Butcher Family have established a Memorial Fund to remember Matthew. Please feel free to forward contributions to:

Matthew Butcher Memorial Fund
Attn: Steven Butcher
P.O. Box 411621
Los Angeles, CA 90041

Butcher was fatally shot inside the Higher Path Holistic dispensary on June 24 around 4:10 p.m. in the 1300 block of Sunset Blvd. A co-worker at the Higher Path Holistic shop was also shot and was in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

Anyone with any information about the shooting should contact Robbery Homicide Division Detectives at (213) 486-6894.

RIP!

Cerritos, CA USA!

Today is the GREATEST DAY of the year!

I will be heading over to the Cerritos Civic Center later tonight to take part in the 38th Annual Let Freedom Ring Celebration.  Let Freedom Ring started in my kitchen some 39 years ago.  My mom Rosemary Economy and a group of our neighbors decided that our city needed our very own Fourth of July Celebration here in Cerritos, since we were a new and growing community.

Do you remember those early days of "Let Freedom Ring," here in Cerritos?  The fireworks in the cow pasture? Man, those cows didn't give milk for days after that first big show. The BBQ Corn on the Cob by the Boy Scouts, and the Pancake Breakfast.  We honored local Prisoners of War from the Vietnam War, and our I got to help plant the "Freedom Tree" at Cerritos Park East back then.

Today, is the 4th of July.  The biggest ALL AMERICAN DAY of the YEAR!

Last night, we watched the mega celebration from Washington, DC on PBS.  The song clip I posted is "Let Freedom Ring," composed and performed by the legendary Barry Manilow.  Believe it or not, Barry was my next door neighbor in Bel Air, CA more than 20 years ago.  Fun times!

Happy Birthday America!

BUENA PARK, CA

Question:  So do you really think these "Day Spas" that are popping up on every other corner are actually dishing up more than "facials" and "massages?"

Answer:  Duh!

The Lincoln Day Spa over at the 6900 Block of Lincoln Avenue (in an apply named  "strip mall") is the latest one of these local joints that are nothing more than "adult convenient stores." After a long investigation, five women and the owner of the Lincoln Day Spa were arrested on prostitution charges on Thursday. The spa advertised "massages and acupuncture," but sex was also being sold, Buena Park Police said.

During Thursday's raid, the owner of the Lincoln Day Spa, Timothy Tuney Pham, 39, of Huntington Beach, was arrested on suspicion of operating outside the scope of a legitimate business.

Cindy Crawford.
A little plastic surgery
does wonders!
Tuyen Thuy Nguyen, 24, of Garden Grove; Nghi Nguyen, 37, of Midway City; Hanh Thi My Nguyen, 51, of Garden Grove, and Cindy Crawford, 37, of Westminster were all arrested on suspicion of prostitution.

Wait a minute?

How did Cindy Crawford get hooked up with this group?  Oh, not "that" Cindy Crawford.

Business records and money were also seized and all five were released.

This should be a fun trial to watch.  Can't wait to see the "evidence."  Yikes.  Stay Tuned, and remember, "buyer beware."

PORT ELIZABETH, SOUTH AFRICA --

Well, so much for this latest saga of Paris Hilton.

A court in South Africa has dropped charges of possessing and smoking marijuana against the millionaire socialite starlet.

Hilton, appeared late Friday in a FIFA World Cup courtroom after being arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana at a quarterfinal between Brazil and the Netherlands.

She said she was innocent of the charges, and that it was "someone else" in her group who had the wacky ta-baccy.

So, stop that "FREE PARIS" movement over on Facebook.

Let the party continue in South Africa!

JOHANNESBURG --

Paris Hilton is in huge trouble in South Africa today.

Reports from the Associated Press are claiming that the Beverly Hills socialite has been "detained" by two South African police officers in the city of Port Elizabeth, while in possession of marijuana.

Paris, what the heck are you thinking?
The officers spoke on condition of anonymity Friday, since they were not authorized to release Hilton's name before she appears in court, but the news is beginning to leak out all over the internet.

One officer said Hilton was caught with an unspecified amount of marijuana, and was appearing in court.

A spokeswoman for police at Port Elizabeth, Brig. Marinda Mills declined to confirm the name, but said a high profile person was appearing in court on drug-related charges.

Santa Catalina Island, CA --

Here are more details on that plane crash over on Catalina Island this afternoon that resulted in the death of the pilot

The crash occurred very close to several youth camps that were occupied at the time of the incident. A brush fire has been burning dangerously close to these island youth camps, and authorities are on the scene dealing with the situation.

The plane crashed shortly after 1 p.m. about two miles from the airport in a remote, hilly area near Echo Lake, and it appears that the pilot may have suffered a heart attack prior to the accident.  The pilot, who has not yet been identified radioed the airport that he could make the runway, but officials said that the sole occupant of the aircraft was dead when they reached the crash site.

A brush fire, that is estimated to be between 15 and 25 acres, is now 50 percent contained, with no flames showing.

VENICE, Calif. --

One man is dead this evening after the small plane he was flying crashed at the popular Penmar Golf Course in Venice, California.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says the plane went down near the 8th hole of the Penmar Golf Course shortly after 6 p.m. this afternoon.
At least one person was reported dead, and no one appears to have been injured on the course that was occupied with terrified golfers.

Penmar Golf Course is just a long 3-Wood drive from the end of Santa Monica Municipal Airport.  The crash took place just east of Lincoln Avenue on Rose Avenue in Venice right next to the City of Santa Monica.  I have played this course many times, and tonight my heart goes out to those involved.

Paramedics are on the scene, and no fire is reported.

Santa Catalina Island, CA

UPDATE AT 4:30 p.m.:
Officials do not know how many people are on board the aircraft and if anyone is injured.  The plane crashed in a remote area of the island

A small plane crash has sparked a brush fire on Catalina Island this afternoon.

Currently the fire is at 25 plus acres and it is buring in grass and oak trees.  No homes are in current danger, and due to the location of the fire on Catalina, members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department are having problems getting water on the blaze.

I follow the LA County Fire Department on Twitter, and would like to suggest that you do as well.  This is a post from them less than 40 minutes ago:

BAIL BONDSMAN NEEDS TO POST HIS OWN BAIL....LOL.

Breaking News:
From District Attorney Steve Cooley
July 1, 2010
3:42 p.m.

LOS ANGELES – A Whittier bail bondsman accused of misappropriating $30,000 from a client was arrested today, the District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Susan Schwartz of the Justice System Integrity Division said Arturo Miramontes, 40,  is charged with two counts of grand theft by embezzlement. The defendant is a licensed bail bondsman at Rodeo Bail Bonds in Whittier.

He is due to appear for arraignment on July 6 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. The defendant was charged in case No. BA372650, a felony complaint for arrest warrant filed on June 23.

In late 2007, the victim contacted Miramontes to secure a bail bond, giving the defendant $30,000 as cash collateral. The victim’s court case was completed and his bail was exonerated.

It is alleged that Miramontes failed to return the cash collateral to the victim. It is further alleged that Miramontes embezzled funds from the insurance company for which he wrote the bond.

If convicted as charged, Miramontes faces three years, eight months in state prison. Bail was recommended at $40,000 for the defendant.

Mexico City, Mexico

Call it a double whammy from good ol' Mother Earth on the people of Mexico over the past 24 hours as a large earthquake and powerful hurricane have both hit this heavily populated country.

First, a strong 6.2 earthquake shook southern Mexico early Wednesday morning, reportedly killing one person in Oaxaca and being felt as far away as Mexico City and the states of Veracruz, Puebla, and Guerrero.   One person was killed when a beam fell on his head crushing him to death.

The quake struck at 2:22 a.m. with an epicenter in rural southwestern Oaxaca near the Pacific Ocean, that lasted a half a minute.

It was strong enough to shake buildings in Mexico City and people jumped out of their beds and sought safety in the streets.

The eastern coastal part of Mexico was also hit by Hurricane Alex that blew into the Gulf of Mexico at a Category 2, causing heavy damage and resulting in at least one death.
