JOSEPH MERCADO:

This is the face of that mad man Joseph Mercado who is under arrest today in that brutal massacre over on Devlin Avenue and Civic Center Drive here in Hawaiian Gardens yesterday.  I am calling him the "Devlin Devil" after his killer rampage yesterday morning that has left our entire community around the Gardens is utter shock and sadness.

Mercado is the "prime and only suspect" in the brutal killing of members of the Tarin Family of Hawaiian Gardens.  Ten members of this wonderful family were terrorized by Mercado yesterday morning, that left at least 3 of them dead of gun shot wounds.

Mercado, 27,  is the ex-boyfriend of Serena Tarin and father of their minor daughter.   Mercado is under arrest today.  He was was injured with a graze wound to his head after two patrol officers with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department opened fire on him after they arrived at the scene.

Mercado also poured gasoline on an exterior wall but failed to light it with a match.  This is what we know so far.

  •  Mercado was in a "domestic dispute" with the Serena Tarin.
  • Mercado gained entry to the Tarin household by shooting a lock from a front door.
  • Mercado used a "semi automatic" weapon in his rampage.
  • Shootings took place in several rooms all over the Tarin household.
As soon as funeral arrangements are announced, I will be placing them here on my Blog.  If you have any thoughts about this crime, hit my comment section below!

Also....here is more from KCAL 9 News from Los Angeles.

Suraya Fadel from KCAL 9 News is to be commended for this report.  Great coverage Suraya!  More details....so check back!

STICK A NEEDLE IN YOUR EYE: Downey Motorcars owner Ruben Hernandez found quilty of fraud. He used "voodoo" magic to attempt to influence the crime.

LOS ANGELES – A Downey real estate owner who engaged authorities in a high-speed pursuit and used voodoo to influence the outcome of his case has been convicted.

Ruben Hernandez, 34, owner of Downey Motorcars, was found guilty of four counts of filing a false application and three counts of grand theft, and this case is bizarre as in "cultist" weird.

Prosecutors said Hernandez purchased six properties using false social security information and bank statements. Rodriguez used false social security numbers to purchase two properties, obtain home equity lines of credit and open a bank account.

Rodriguez was arrested shortly after the case was filed in January 2008. Hernandez, however, eluded authorities. About a year later, Investigator David Ishibashi of the District Attorney’s Office, Investigator Steve Louie of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Deputy U.S. Marshall Sal Reyes tracked Hernandez down to a bungalow in Pasadena.

On Feb. 12, 2009, as Hernandez and his wife, Aida Gutierrez, 24, were coming out of their driveway, authorities moved in. Hernandez, ultimately, was arrested after engaging investigators in a mile-long, 80-mile-per-hour pursuit.

When authorities executed a search warrant on the home where Hernandez was staying, they discovered a voodoo shrine, the prosecutor said. The shrine included various artifacts and voodoo dolls – dunked head down in cups of water with pins in the eyes – featuring the names of the prosecutor, the investigators assigned to the case and the case number.

WTF? A "voodoo shrine?"  Do people still practice voodoo in Downey?  I thought the City of Downey outlawed voodoo back when "voodoo" was running rampant back in the 1800's?

Deputy District Attorney Eugene Hanrahan of the Major Fraud Section said jurors deliberated for four days before convicting the crime.

Jurors deadlocked on one count of evading arrest and two counts each of filing a false application and grand theft.

Co-defendant Joel Rodriguez, 44, owner of Coast to Coast Mortgage in Downey, was convicted of six counts of filing a false application and five counts of grand theft. The jury deadlocked on one count of grand theft.

As to both defendants, jurors found true a white-collar crime allegation that the loss was more than $500,000 and an excessive-taking allegation that the loss was more than $1.3 million.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lance Ito (yep, THAT Judge Ito from the OJ Simpson murder case fame)  said Hernandez and Rodriguez will be sentenced on June 2 in Department 110 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Hernandez faces a maximum prison term of 13 years. Rodriguez could be sentenced to a maximum term of 14 years, four months.

Artesia Councilman Larry Nelson: A Funeral that will be remembered for a lifetime!

Artesia, CA:

Today the People of Artesia, California gathered to remember the life of a remarkable man who touched everyone in this tight knit enclave.

Councilman Larry Nelson was laid to rest today with pomp and ceremony and love and tenderness.

Longtime friend Ed Bloomfield, an icon himself here in Artesia, remembered the "lovable Larry" as a "real genuine, gentle soul who was larger than life."

"Larry deeply loved his family, friends, and his city and country," Bloomfield said during an emotional graveside service. "Larry would give and give without fanfare, over and over again, to the people of Artesia. He loved this city, and this city loved Larry Nelson."

The funeral today was something this community shall not forget for generations.

Nelson who died on May 1 after fighting a battle with bone cancer was escorted from Holy Family Catholic Church to the historic Artesia Cemetery in a glass enclosed, horse drawn carriage with two magical white horses, and three well dressed Coachmen.

The graveside service, that was attended by several hundred people had a touching 21 Gun Salute from a retired military corp, an Irish bag piper, the launching of white doves, singers (his favorite song  "Happy Trails" was sung today) and taps were played.

Nelson served on Artesia’s City Council since March 1999, and has been mayor twice.

He coined the popular slogan that can still be seen on bumper stickers throughout the city, “Artesia, where every day is a good day.”

He married his wife Pat in 1970, and is survived by her, their son Chip, daughter-in-law Dawn, and grandchildren Austin Gray, Dakota Nelson, and Larry Nelson III.

Hawaiian Gardens, CA:

A Hawaiian Gardens neighborhood is the scene of a horrific crime this morning, that has left two dead and three others in critical condition.

Here are the latest details.

At around 4 a.m. today, a man apparently went on a shooting "rampage" on the 21000 Block of Devlin Avenue.  The cross street is Civic Center Drive.

The man killed his fiancee and her teenage brother before a sheriff's deputy wounded the suspect, bringing an end to the violence, sheriff's officials are reporting.  Five people were shot altogether.  A sheriff's deputy on routine patrol heard gunshots from an automatic rifle and went to investigate. When the Deputy arrived at the Devlin Avenue scene, he confronted the gunman as he exited the home in question.

When the suspect pointed his weapon at the deputy, the deputy fired two shots, striking the suspect, according to Sheriff Commander Don Waldie.

Waldie is telling local news channels that as many as ten family members were inside the house when the suspect stormed in and "just started shooting."  He shot his fiance's mother and father downstairs and then went upstairs where he shot and killed his fiance' and her 14-year-old brother.  The mother and father were taken to a hospital for treatment. The mother is in critical condition, he said. The father's condition was not immediately known.

The scene was so chaotic that family members were jumping out of upstairs windows to escape.

The suspect also poured gasoline around the house in an apparent attempt to burn the house down, he said.
Investigators say the suspect was upset over his relationship, and was angry at the woman's family.   As soon as details are updated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, I will put them up here on the Blog.

In the meantime, if you live in that neighborhood and want to share any details, please hit my comment section below.

Pico Rivera, CA:

The cat is out of the bag.

Tonight I have to congratulate Jacki Wells Cisneros from KNBC News here in Los Angeles, and her husband Gilbert of Pico Rivera for winning that massive $266,000,000.00 Mega Millions Super Lottery Jackpot.

I am THRILLED for BOTH Jacki and Gilbert.

When I heard that they won earlier today (via the posts from her Facebook page)  I was beyond thrilled for this wonderful and deserving couple.

Jacki and I have been "pals" on Facebook for the past 6 months and we exchange lots of great notes back and forth.  She is passionate about our community and to those less fortuante in the world around us.

Tonight the Lottery Gods are SMILING DOWN on her and Gilbert!

Their lives have been changed forever.

The best part of this incredible story is that as soon as it sunk in that they had won, they did the right thing, by heading to the Catholic Church they attend in Pico Rivera and they thanked God for their new fortune.

Congrats, Jacki and Gilbert, good things happen to good people!!

SAN DIEGO, CA:

Esteban Nunez is heading to jail after a college road trip turned into a night of mayhem that left an innocent man dead from a stabbing in 2008.

The wild-child son of ex-California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez. Esteban and another man pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter today for their roles in the fatal stabbing of a college fraternity member.

Nunez, 21, and co-defendant Ryan Jett, 24, could face 16 years in prison for the death of Luis Dos Santos, a 22-year-old San Diego Mesa College student who was stabbed in the chest.  Both of the men are from Sacramento, even  though Nunez was born and raised here in East Los Angeles.

Both also plead guilty to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Prosecutors said Esteban Nunez, Jett and two other men were angry because they were refused entry to a fraternity party and attacked Dos Santos and three others near San Diego State University on Oct. 4, 2008.

Sentencing will be on June 25.

The other men involved in the case pleaded to lesser charges.  Rafael Garcia, 21, of Sacramento pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to destroy evidence. He could face up to three years in prison at his sentencing on June 24.

Leshanor Thomas, 21, also of Sacramento, pleaded guilty in February to one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon. He could face up to four years, eight months in prison.

Do you think this is "justice" or did Nunez get off too easy because of his politically well connected dad?  Tell me what you think by hitting my comment section.

BEVERLY HILLS – Layla Rosette Trawick, the gal I dubbed the "We Ho Target Butcher" after her stabbing rampage inside a West Hollywood Target on Monday was charged today with four counts of attempted murder.

Trawick, 34,  was arraigned on Wednesday at the Beverly Hills Superior Court.

She was also charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, a knife, and special allegations of use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury.

Prosecutors are asking bail be set at $4 million.

Trawick brought the knives with her to the La Brea Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard store and attacked shoppers, stabbing four people, prosecutors claim.

An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy identified at Clay Grant who was in the store shopping confronted her and arrested her at gunpoint and is being hailed as a hero for his quick actions.

Court records, that I posted in previous posts, show that Trawick had been charged over the years with mostly minor crimes, including public drunkenness, petty theft and vandalism.

She also was arrested for misdemeanor assault.

Holy LOCAL LOTTERY WINNER!!

A Pico Rivera resident, who is one of my pals friends, is now one of the richest women in California after hitting yesterday's Mega Millions Lottery, as in $266,000,000.00 rich!

I am so so thrilled for her.  I don't want to publish her name till she makes the big announcement!

She works as a Morning News Producer at KNBC here in  Los Angeles, and her husband recently got laid off.

The ticket was sold at L & L Hawaiian BBQ, 8760 Washington Boulevard. The winner, is described as a young female adult who is an employee of that restuarant. Her mother is comfirming the news on local television news stations.  She is a great woman of Faith, and someone I have grown to admire for the past several months of communicating with her via Facebook.

She matched all six numbers in Tuesday night's MEGA Millions draw. Those were 21, 9, 36, 43, 31 and Mega number 8.  The store will receive the maximum retailer bonus of $1 million.

In addition to the jackpot winning ticket, there were seven other tickets that matched five of six numbers in Tuesday night's drawing. Each is worth $179,428.

I will be updated this amazing news later tonight.

Thanks to a ruling from Sacramento County Judge Lloyd Connelly this morning, the State of California will now be allowed to transfer more than $2 billion from local city redevelopment agency funds to help balance the massive California's budget crisis.

This is bad news for cities like Cerritos, Bellflower, Pico Rivera, Beverly Hills and Long Beach who rely on this source of revenue for their annual budgets.

Judge Connelly on Tuesday denied a request from local governments who wanted to stop the state from grabbing their redevelopment funds, which generally are used for to promote public works projects and rehabilitate downtown's.

If Connelly had approved the injunction, it would have created an even bigger problem for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as he prepares to release his revised budget later this month. California is projecting a deficit of roughly $20 billion in the fiscal year that starts in July.

Under last year's budget, the state used the money from redevelopment funds for schools in those districts.   Cerritos has been fighting this case for more than the past two years.  I will keep you posted on more details.
