SLC, UT-

Keli McGregor, a former football star who was president of the baseball Colorado Rockies since 2001, was found dead in a Salt Lake City hotel earlier today.

McGregor was only 49 years old, and his death has sent a shockwave throughout Major League Baseball tonight.

Rockies chairman and CEO Charlie Monfort, who was with McGregor on a business trip in Salt Lake City when McGregor was found dead in his hotel room Tuesday morning, spoke for the organization, and spoke from the heart.

McGregor was 48. He is survived by his wife, Lori, and four children.

Salt Lake City Police Det. Rick Wall said officers were called to the Grand America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City around 9 a.m. MT Tuesday morning.   When associates were unable to reach McGregor. Wall said members of the fire department and paramedics were unable to revive McGregor, who was in Salt Lake City with Monfort and executive vice president Greg Feasel.

Wall said there was no suspicion of foul play and McGregor's death was "consistent with natural causes." The investigation has been turned over to the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office, which is standard in such cases.

His passing is a huge loss to the world of sports.  Tonight my thoughts are with his family and freinds.

KNABE: LA County to improve the San Gabriel River Bike Trail here in Cerritos and Lakewood! Thanks Don!

No comments:
What's THE REaction:

LOS ANGELES, CA April 20, 2010 –

Thanks to our local hometown hero, Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe,  a dangerous stretch of road on the Westside of Cerritos and East Lakewood is finally going to be fixed.

Tonight, local bike riders and car drivers are thrilled about this news.

Several sections of the San Gabriel River Bicycle Trail will soon be reconstructed in the Cities of Cerritos and Lakewood,  Knabe announced today.

The project will be completed in four separate phases, and is being funded with over $2.5 million in Fourth District Capital Improvement funds. The reconstruction will also remove sharp turns and improve the sight distance, which will improve the level of safety for trail users.

Phase 1, which was completed on February 12, 2009, realigned and reconstructed 350 feet of the trail, at Del Amo Boulevard in City of Cerritos. Phase 1 also consisted of the relocation of the existing access gates and power poles, and the installation of trail signage, yellow centerline striping, and pavement markings.

Next is Phase 2, which will cost an estimated $336,000, will realign and reconstruct another 460 feet of the path just south of Del Amo Boulevard. Additionally, the existing reclamation waterline and street lights will be relocated, and trail signage, yellow centerline striping, and pavement markings will be installed.

Phase 3 has a budget of $1,080,000 and consists of the reconstruction of an approximately one mile segment of the trail and widening the existing bike trail from 10 feet to 12 feet wide from Del Amo Boulevard to Carson Street in the City of Lakewood.

Finally, Phase 4 will cost an estimated $1,350,000, and will realign and reconstruct a tunnel and 125 feet of the path at 183rd Street in the City of Cerritos. A new access ramp will be constructed on the north side of 183rd Street, which will follow the alignment of the current tunnel approach.

“It is important that the bike paths along our riverbeds are safe,” said Supervisor Knabe. “The improvements will enhance the safety and increase enjoyment of the numerous residents and visitors who use the San Gabriel River Bike Trail.”

This project is part of a larger capital investment plan that Supervisor Knabe announced during his annual State of the County address on November 4, 2009. At the event, Supervisor Knabe unveiled over $42 million in Fourth District Capital Projects that would be built in communities across the Fourth District in 2010.

Thanks, Don.  This has been one of the most dangerous sections in our community for eons.

This will save lives and protect those who travel this road day in and day out!

CALIFORNIA POT LAW: Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley just say's "NO" to November Ballot Proposition that would legalize marijuana here

1 comment:
What's THE REaction:
Made by me.Image via Wikipedia
LOS ANGELES – District Attorney Steve Cooley announced today that he opposes the marijuana legalization initiative and outlined a myriad of legal problems that will be created by its passage in a letter to California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr.

Cooley is also a candidate for Attorney General in the upcoming June 8th Republican Primary.  He wants to take Brown's job in November.

“The marijuana initiative is terribly misleading, poorly drafted and not in the best interests of California residents,” Cooley said in a written statement. “It will not regulate, not control nor effectively tax marijuana in California.”

Cooley said that legalizing marijuana under “The Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010” will not generate substantial revenue for local governments or the state, as initiative sponsors claim. Instead, passage would result in California losing federal funds because the initiative violates the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988.

Cooley said that unlike state regulation of alcohol, the initiative sets up no framework for the state to control marijuana sales and purchases. Local governments will have to come up with their own local ordinances, resulting in “a completely unworkable patchwork of different laws throughout the state’s 483 cities and 58 counties,” he explained.

In addition, the initiative gives the state no control over marijuana-related activities. It also restricts the rights of property owners, as well as potentially causing the loss of businesses and jobs throughout California.

“This is a bad initiative that will create tremendous harm and no good at all,” Cooley said. “I have asked that the Attorney General not approve the proposed Title and Summary, unless it truly reflects the initiative’s seriously negative consequences.”

Will you be supporing Cooley for Attorney General in June?  Drop me your thoughts at my comment section below!

Catalina Island, CA:

It was like something out of a Johnny Deep Pirate movie.

But today's mega high seas pot bust in a remote Catalina Island beach is being called a major arrest on the war on drugs from Mexican Drug Lords into Los Angeles.

A real high seas drama that included real "pirates" and a makeshift 30-foot ponga-type boat with three male Mexican nationals was discovered on Catalina Island by Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials on Monday.

The homemade boat, had run aground on a very remote beach on the southwest side of Catalina Island outside of the city of Avalon.   The boat was a flat bottomed specially rigged ocean-going motorboat that was powered by two 250-horsepower motors.  The small boat was literally a floating bomb with over 400 gallons of fuel was on the boat in gas containers.

Once the three pirates ran onto the beach, they unloaded a massive amount of marijuana in multiple water proof bundles.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies detain the three Mexican nationalists with the help of the United States Coast Guard.  They are all under arrest tonight for Transportation of Narcotics and were booked at a Federal facility (probably in Downtown Los Angeles).

After seeing the massive pot packets thrown all over the rocky beach side cliffs, transporting the weed back to the mainland proved to be tricky for law enforcement.

When all gathered, and accounted for, more than 4,000 pounds of the high end Mexican pot had a value of more than $3 million/

"These arrests and recovery were the direct result of a diligent and observant Sheriff's Department employee," said LASD Captain Mike Parker.

"He (the employee) called for backup from other Sheriff's Department and United States Coast Guard Personnel, and we has a very successful outcome," Parker added.

"It took dozens of LASD Deputies several hours to load the large rescue helicopter, and due to the size of the seizure two helicopter flights were needed to transport the marijuana to the mainland," he said.

Los Angeles, CA:

American Federation of Teachers(AFT)  union boss Randi Weingarten is now officially on the bandwagon to legalize marijuana here in California.

The controversial teachers union president is supporting this Novembers divisive ballot measure and her bizarre comments over the weekend here have turned heads, including mine.

Btw...
The American Federation of Teachers is the union that also represents the teachers here in the ABC Unified School District that teaches our children in Cerritos, Artesia, East Lakewood, South Norwalk, and Hawaiian Gardens.  Laura Rico, the leader of the ABCFT is a National Vice President of this union under Weingarten's reins.

It is not known if the ABC Federation of Teachers is going to follow their national leader on this issue, but, in union politics....you ALWAYS follow your national unions leadership, especially when they serve "both masters."

Weingarten, made her revelation to support the November California Pot Proposition at this weekends California Democratic Party Convention in Los Angeles.  The proponents of the legal pot movement were out in force during the three-day confab.

"Everything in moderation is pretty much fine," Weingarten said when asked by "Real Time" host Bill Maher whether she'd back the measure. "Wow," said fellow guest Washington Post editorial writer Jonathan Capehart. "Teacher-approved!"

Weingarten quickly added that she only endorsed pot smoking "if it's legal."

Note to Weingarten: What planet are you living on?  "Moderation."  Is she whacked out?  Quick, grab a urine sample for this gal.

The California initiative, known as the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act, would allow anyone over 21 to possess 1 oz. of marijuana and grow plants in an area no larger than 25 square feet. It also allows marijuana to be grown and sold and imposes taxes on production and sales.

Asked by Maher about parents who toke up but don't want their children to, Weingarten said, "When something becomes a forbidden fruit, you have to spend a whole lot of time making sure that, when you say no, people don't think you mean yes."

The 52-year old New York City native also admitted that she was a former pot smoker but due to her asthma, her "experimentation with it was short-lived."

Give me a break.

I hope the brass at the ABC Federation of Teachers has the balls to just "say no" to Randi Weingarten.

Our children deserve better.

Warsaw, Poland:

Thousands of people are currently gathering in Krakow for the sad state funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Leah.

The state funeral will begin with a the Mass at Krakow's St Mary's Catholic Basilica.  This is one of the saddest days in the modern history of Poland.  The country is still in a state of shock over the tremendous blow to it's government.

After a funeral Mass, the president will be buried in Wawel Cathedral, the resting place of Poland's kings and national heroes.   He and 95 others died eight days ago when their plane crashed in fog en route to a ceremony in Russia.  Like many American's, I have been staying up late (or early) to watch the official state funeral and memorial mass that took place yesterday.   Every single part of the Poland's government has been effected from this tragedy.

It is going to take months, if not years to build Poland back up from its sorrow.

As being reported, dozens of world leaders cannot attend because flights have been grounded by Iceland's volcano.

Here is the latest list of attendees and no-shows:

Not attending:

US President Barack Obama
French President Nicolas Sarkozy
German Chancellor Angela Merkel
UK's Prince (Charles) of Wales and Foreign Secretary David Miliband
Spanish King Juan Carlos and PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero
Turkish President Abdullah Gul
Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt
Finnish President Tarja Halonen
South Korean PM Chung Un-Chan
Canadian PM Stephen Harper
Icelandic President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson

Those expecting to Attend incude:

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (pending)
Czech President Vaclav Klaus
Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic
Slovenian President Danilo Turk
Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych
Latvian President Valdis Zatlers
Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Andrus Ansip
Romanian President Traian Basescu
Hungarian President Lazslo Solyom and PM Gordon Bajnai

The bodies of the President and his First Lady were driven slowly through Warsaw past places linked to Kaczynski's life. They include city hall, where he served as mayor of Warsaw, and a museum that he championed on the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

The bodies were then placed on a military transport plane, which taxied slowly on the runway before taking off to Krakow. It is flying below the volcanic ash plume paralyzing air travel in Europe.

If you are up late here on the West Coast of the United States, please turn to the BBC on your cable system to watch the Funeral.  This reminds me of when Princess Diana's funeral took place in the middle of night here in the US.

Keep Poland and the wonderful people of this country in your prayers this Sunday!

Bellflower, USA:

I cannot stand watching a dog suffer from the hands of an abuser, and tonight it appears that justice is taking its course here in a much publicized case involving a starving German Shepard dubbed "Courage."

Kimberly Nizato, 26, from Bellflower was arrested today on charges that she starved her Gernam Shepherd for several weeks until the dog ate dirt to survive.

Getting cuffed.....

The arrest took place just before 11 a.m. at the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority in Downey, according to Capt. Aaron Reyes of the agency.

Nizato was taken to the Lakewood Sheriff's station to be booked.

Someone saw the emaciated animal in Bellflower and brought him to an emergency animal hospital last week in Garden Grove.  So what does Nizato do for a living?  You got it. She works in a Dog and Animal Hospital.  Amazing, ain't it.

BTW.  One of her so-called "Facebook Friends" just sent me this photo of Miss Kim in action...below.  YIKES! Be careful what you post on FB. Duh.

"Wild Kim Nizato" from her Facebook Page.
Veterinarian Dr. Bill Grant told local news channels that the 3-year-old dog weighed just 37 pounds -- less than half his normal body weight. Courgae now weighs 41 pounds.

Grant says Courage faces months of recovery, but is recovering well. More tests will determine if Courage's liver and kidneys will recover from the advanced malnutrition.  Nizato faces 4 to 5 years in jail if she is found guilty.

COURAGE the WONDER DOG IS FIGHTING BACK!
I hope if she is convicted of this crime, that they make her eat rocks.

LONDON, UK -

If you are planning a trip across the Pond on Thursday or Friday from LAX or JFK in NYC you might want to check with your airline to see if you will be able to actually get you to Northern Europe.  Flights into all of Northern Europe are now being cancelled due to the massive volcano eruption in Iceland.

Photo from the Icelandic Coast Guard.
(Yes, they do HAVE an "ICELANDIC COAST GUARD!")

Here's the scoop.  A massive ash clouds have drifted from Iceland's erupting volcano has now disrupted air traffic across Northern Europe Thursday, forcing airports to close and the cancelation of hundreds of flights in Britain, Ireland and the Nordic countries.

In Iceland, hundreds have fled from floodwaters rising since the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier erupted Wednesday for the second time in less than a month. As water gushed down the mountainside, rivers had risen by up to 10 feet by Wednesday night.

The volcano was sending up smoke and ash that posed "a significant safety threat to aircraft," Britain's National Air Traffic Service said, as visibility is compromised and debris can get sucked into airplane engines.

So.  The Planet Earth trumps again.

SACRAMENTO, CA --

Poor Senator Roy Ashburn.   2010 has not been a good year for him.

The Bakersfield Republican State Senator will have to serve 48 hours in the Sacramento County Jail and serve three years of probation after pleading no contest to driving under the influence.

Ashburn entered his no contest plea to the misdemeanor charges Wednesday in Sacramento County Superior Court.

He will also pay fines and fees of about $2,000, attend a mandatory first offender DUI program and have his license suspended for 30 days.  Ashburn was pulled over on March 3 shortly after 2 a.m. when CHP officers saw his state car driving in an erratic manner. A breath test was conducted and a subsequent blood test turned up a blood alcohol level of .15 percent. Under California law, a driver is under the influence with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent.

In the days after his arrest, the conservative lawmaker was forced "out of the closet" after it was revealed that he was gay after he got drunk at "Faces (gay) Night Club" in Sacramento before his arrest on drunk driving charges.

Ashburn is been the "butt" of late night talk show host jokes for the past month, and his jail time will surely be "plastered" all over the media once again.  Opps....I made a "punny."  Go get'em Roy!

LOS ANGELES - A former Pico Rivera mayor pleaded not guilty Wednesday to felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from alleged actions while in office, but the district attorney will offer him a plea deal.

Ron Beilke was arraigned Wednesday at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center downtown Wednesday on two felony and six misdemeanor counts. Deputy District Attorney Sandi Roth said a hearing has been set for May 11 when Beilke can choose to plead guilty for a lighter penalty or request a preliminary hearing date be set.

"We'll be making him an offer," she said.   If the case goes to trial and he is convicted on all charges, Beilke could face a maximum of seven years, eight months in state prison and could lose the right to hold public office, Roth said.

Beilke's attorney, Anthony Willoughby, said his client isn't guilty.   "They might want to make us an offer but I doubt very seriously we're going to go there," Willoughby said. "I don't think he's guilty and I think we have the evidence to prove that."

Voters in Long Beach have said "no" to one city council member who tried to get around the cities term limit law and put another on a "political lifeline."

Termed out council member Val Lerch was soundly defeated yesterday in his bid to win a third term on the city council in the 9th District, via a write in campaign. Instead voters elected Steven Neal by a comfortable margin of 52%.  Neal avoided a run off since he received a 50% plus one vote majority of the votes cast.

Another termed out city council member Tonia Uranga Reyes has been given a "political life line" in her attempt to stay on the city council for a third term.  She will face off against popular upstart James Johnson as assistant city auditor in the 7th District run off election on June 8th.  In the final unofficial election results posted early today by the city clerk, Reyes Uranga received 30.7 percent of 4,712 votes cast, putting her in second place to Johnson who finished with 45 percent.

Popular incumbent City Council members Robert Garcia, Gary DeLong and Gerrie Shipskie all won  reelection bids, as did Mayor Bob Foster.  City Attorney Robert Shannon also won over challenger Tom Reeves in a hard fought campaign.
