Power Toyota of Cerritos Settles Consumer Case with Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office

No comments:
What's THE REaction:

LOS ANGELES – A civil lawsuit against Power Toyota Cerritos has been settled with the car dealership agreeing to pay $172,000 in monetary relief including civil penalties and legal costs incurred by the District Attorney’s Office.

Deputy District Attorney Dana Aratani of the Consumer Protection Division said the dealership agreed to the settlement without admitting liability. Deputy District Attorney Thomas Wenke also worked on the case.

Under the terms of the stipulated judgment, the dealership is permanently enjoined from making untrue or misleading statements to customers in connection with the sale or lease of any vehicle.

Power Toyota Cerritos is owned by Mr. Wheels Incorporated, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The civil action filed by the District Attorney’s Office alleged that certain staff of Toyota Cerritos made false and misleading statements to customers in an effort to induce consumers to lease rather than purchase automobiles.

An investigation by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) revealed that misrepresentations to some customers included falsely advising them that they did not qualify for a loan, that they could convert a lease into a purchase at any time and that it was in their best financial interest to lease.

The practice resulted in greater commissions for the sales staff involved and higher prices for customers, prosecutors said. The allegations of unfair business practices and untrue or misleading statements are violations of California’s Business and Professions Code. The settlement provided restitution for the victims through a related administrative action by the DMV.

Power Toyota Cerritos worked cooperatively in both the investigation and in resolving the case with the District Attorney’s Office. The matter was settled concurrently with an administrative action brought by the DMV.

The stipulated judgment was signed on March 4 by Judge Mel Red Recana of the Los Angeles Superior Court and announced today.

“L.A. Heroes: Untold Stories of Haiti": NBC4 Los Angeles looks at our local "miracle" makers who helped in the living hell in Haiti. Hosted by Robert Kovacik this Sunday at 5 p.m. on Channel 4, Replay at 11:35 p.m.

What's THE REaction:
My amazing (and talented pal) Robert Kovacik from NBC4 News here in Los Angeles...will be hosting a riviting documentary this coming Sunday afternoon that covers the lives of some very special local heroes who provided miracles during the living hell that is now the nation of  Haiti. It will also be replayed at 11:35 p.m. that same day.

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake hits Haiti, shattering Port-Au-Prince, the island’s capital and outlying areas. The 72-member Los Angeles County Fire’s Urban Search and Rescue team (USAR) is deployed to help earthquake victims in round-the-clock search-and-rescue missions.

Miraculously, the team, which included firefighters, doctors, structural engineers, firefighters, communications specialists and six search–and-rescue dogs, are able to save nine lives during their two-week mission.

On Sunday, March 14th at 5PM, NBC4 will air L.A. Heroes: Untold Stories of Haiti,” a half-hour special featuring exclusive, never-before-seen video taken by the USAR team as they heroically free survivors from the twisted metal and concrete of collapsed buildings.

NBC4 Reporter Robert Kovacik is the host of the special, which will also re-air at 11:35PM the same evening.

The emotional rescue of two sisters and a neighbor entombed by tons of collapsed apartment building concrete will be seen for the first time. USAR video will also take viewers inside the void where bank manager Jinette Sainfort lay helplessly trapped beneath the rubble of the bank’s parking garage. Sainfort lost four fingers and suffered a crushed ankle, but still managed to sing a church hymn upon her release to become one of the iconic faces of the Haiti earthquake.

“L.A. Heroes: Untold Stories of Haiti” reunites Sainfort and her USAR rescuers for the first time since the earthquake. The touching reunion took place via satellite, connecting Sainfort from Florida, where she now lives, and her rescuers in East Los Angeles at the L.A. County Fire Headquarters.

In addition to interviews with USAR members, viewers will also get to learn more about the canine contingent of the team and their handlers. How do they do what they do? How are they utilized? These and many more questions are answered in the special.

“L.A. Heroes: Untold Stories of Haiti” is a “Channel 4 News” production. Rebecca Nieto is the Executive producer. Thomas Bravo and Scott Meadows were the videographers for the special. Dino Castro and Lindsey Jackson served as editors.

Make sure you see this amazing documentary.

  • Incident put Kennedy High School and Walker JHS on Lockdown for a while today

La Palma, CA in The OC:

3 p.m. PST

A traffic accident in La Palma today resulted in the arrest of at least one minor on a stolen vehicle charge, causing a temporary lockdown of John F. Kennedy High School, and turned local Cypress Police Chief Mark Yokoyama into a real local crime catching hero.
Check this out…
At 11:10 a.m. this morning, at Crescent Avenue and Walker Avenue in La Palma, a crash involving two vehicles took place. One of the cars involved was an SUV that had just been stolen from a local neighborhood.

The two drivers of the stolen SUV, both minors, immediately ran from the scene on foot, one going in one direction, and the other heading in the opposite way.

Witnessing this entire incident was Cypress Police Chief Mark Yokoyama who just happened to be in La Palma (the city next door to Cypress). So seeing this possible crime in progress, Chief Yokoyama did what any good “beat cop” would do, he took out after the fleeing youth twice his age, on foot.

Not only did Yokoyama catch his suspect, he ended up in “good shape, unhurt, and only mess up his uniform,” according to Sgt. Tom Bruce who oversees the media division for the Cypress Police Department.

According to Sgt. Raul Morales of the La Palma Police Department, the status of the other minor suspect involved is still being investigated and feels that an arrest will be forthcoming.  The passenger in the other vehicle who was involved in the crash, suffered minor injuries and is being treated at a local hospital.

So, if you are ever in Cypress or La Palma and commit a crime, just look over your shoulder, and pray that Chief Yokoyama isn’t wearing a pair of sneakers…

Norwalk:
Today, Monique and Carlos become BFF.  (That's BEST FRIENDS FOREVER for you non-computer geeks).

Monique Patino, the Los Angeles County Sheriff 911 Telephone Dispatcher from the Norwalk Station met the 7 year old little boy hero named "Carlos" today in an emotional press conference beam all over the world.

Carlos, who's last name is not being reported due to his age, and Patino were united today for the first time after she took his frantic 911 yesterday when 3 armed gun men broke into his families Cresson Avenue home.

Patino, who takes dozens of 911 calls each and every day, took that one emergency call yesterday from Carlos that "changed her life forever."  Patino, the who has a daughter the same age as Carlos, held back tears as she pinned a special "badge" onto a beaming and very proud Carlos.

Here is now the now famous crime went down....

Three suspects armed with handguns entered his families home in Norwalk through an unlocked front door and announced that they were there to "take what they wanted."  While inside the house, Carlos,  who had gone undetected by the suspects, hid and dialed 9-1-1.

While the frightened boy explained to the Sheriff’s 9-1-1 dispatcher what was happening, the suspects realized someone was locked in the bathroom and forced entry. One of the suspects grabbed the seven year old and took control of the phone as he was talking to 9-1-1. The suspect asked Carlos who he called and when the victim stated “9-1-1,” the suspects immediately fled the location without injuring the residents or obtaining any property.

Carlos is now an International Hero.  I LOVE this kid.  He is my new HERO!  W2G Carlos.  I bet he will be heading to the White House, real soon to meet President Obama....mark my words...Jay Leno...David Letterman....OPRAH!

BTW....The suspects left the area in a Grey Acura RXS 2 door vehicle.

MUST DO:  Cerritos City Council Mayoral Transition

Cerritos: Tonight, a new Mayor will be selected. Who will it be? Don't miss this meeting at Cerritos City Hall beginning at 7 p.m.

If Joseph Cho is selected Mayor tonight, it will mark the first time in the history of Cerritos that a Korean is named in the top City Council post.

If Cho is not selected, and there is lots of talk . .. then tonight could get "hysterical" .... on many different levels.... and on all sides....

Here's the lo' down....

What: Cerritos, California  selects a new mayor tonight
When: TONIGHT.  Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 7pm
Where: Cerritos City Hall Council Chambers over at 183rd and Bloomfield
Who:  Frankly, I am not "really" sure "WHO" will be the next Mayor of Cerritos.
Logic says it will be Mayor Pro-Tem Joseph Cho.  But then again, anything can happen.
Why:  Don't look for usual lavish after party due to Recession.
How: You need 3 votes to be named Mayor, and 3 votes to be named Mayor Pro Tem.
         Both are "toss-ups"
Bonus:  Cablecast live on Cerritos TV3 at http://www.cerritos.us/

Los Angeles, California  --

Actor Corey Haim, who appeared in a number of movies during the 1980s, died early today.    He was just 38 years old.

Haim, 38, was taken to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:30 a.m.  He was living at the world famous Oakwood Apartments in the Hollywood Hills, and last night he collapsed at around 1:30 a.m. in his unit.

According to his mother, Haim had been suffering from flu-like symptoms for the past couple of days.  Law enforcement is not ruling out that his death is realated to a possible "drug overdose."

Haim's most famous role was in the 1987 movie "The Lost Boys" in which he appeared with his frequent co-star, Corey Feldman.

In later years, the two friends -- who appeared in eight movies together -- both struggled with drug abuse and went their separate ways. They reunited for a reality show, "The Two Coreys," in 2007, but A&E Network canceled the program after slightly more than a year.

Stay tuned for media madness...or not....
Sad.  RIP.

A brave 7-year old boy is being hailed as a hero tonight for his quick thinking tonight over on Cresson Avenue in Norwalk during a scary home-invasion robbery.

Three suspects armed with handguns entered a residence through an unlocked front door and announced that they were there to "take what they wanted."

I can't even imagine the fear this family must be feeling tonight after this horrific ordeal.

Here are the details from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department:

While inside the house, the seven year old boy, who had gone undetected by the suspects, hid in a locked bathroom, and dialed 9-1-1. While the frightened boy explained to the Sheriff’s 9-1-1 dispatcher what was happening, the suspects realized someone was locked in the bathroom and forced entry.

One of the suspects grabbed the seven year old and took control of the phone as he was talking to 9-1-1. The suspect asked the boy who he called and when the victim stated “9-1-1,” the suspects immediately fled the location without injuring the residents or obtaining any property.

The suspects left the area in a Grey Acura RXS 2 door vehicle.

As a result of the phone conversation, the Sheriff’s 9-1-1 Operator initially believed two people had  been shot. Thank goodness that Deputies arrived within less than three minutes, and found that while the victims were very frightened, none of them had been injured.

Captain Pat Maxwell, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said, “If not for the brave and educated actions of the 7-year old boy, this might have ended tragically. If a witness can provide more information on these suspects, we can stop this from happening to someone else.”

So tonight, we need to be paying extra attention around the hood here in  Cerritos, Artesia, Norwalk, DowneyBellflower and SFS.

Lets catch this crazy suspects.

Home invasion robberies are becoming too common place here.

Your bogus $100,000,000.00 lawsuit against E-Trade's use of the name "Lindsay-holic" in their wildly popular TV ad is much ado about nuttin honey.

There are lots of gals in the 'biz and in America with your name "Lindsay" or "Lindsey." Of 4276 names in the 1990 United States Census, your name ranks as the 301st most common name on the books.

I pitty the poor Judge who will have to hear your lawsuit. You are making a mockery of the legal system.

LONG BEACH, Calif. - I have to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to Cerritos resident Caspar Ware, the outstanding sophomore from Cal State Long Beach's Basketball team for being named to the Big West All-Conference Second Team in a vote of the leagues coaches today.

T.J. Robinson earned first-team all-league honors as well.

Ware  a graduate of Gahr High School and resident of Cerritos earned second-team accolades after averaging 11.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

He finished the regular season with three 20-point games, 18 double-digit scoring games and one double-double. Ware led the Big West Conference is assists, while finishing second in steals, seventh in free throw percentage (.764) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.60). His 147 assists are tied for the eighth most in a season at LBSU and his 57 steals rank ninth on the single season list. Last year, as a freshman he was named to the Big West All-Freshman Team.

I am a HUGE fan of Casper...to watch him play is prue magic.

I wish him and the 49ers GOOD LUCK this week in the Big West Tournament here in Anaheim...they have the #3 seed in the tourney...so they have to be REALLY GOOD and bring their game to win...

Keepin' my fingers crossed that the 49ers will be dancin' in the March Madness later this month!

Randy:
Your coverage of the Bobby Salcedo murder was excellent. Bobby was a dear friend of mine, as are all his brothers. I grew up right next door to Bobby from 1976, until we both moved in 2003. Our parents still live next door to each other in the same houses we grew up in.

I am writing to let you know we are planning a Bobby Salcedo Scholarship Luncheon on March 21, 2010 from Noon-4:00 p.m. at the Grace T. Black Auditorium in El Monte. That is also the date that Bobby would have celebrated his 34th birthday.

Please see the attached flyer and letter.  Feel free to share with your friends, colleagues, and followers.  Please let me know if you have any questions. Keep up the great work!

Best Regards,
John Ogaz

Here is more information about this tribute luncheon....

"Roberto “Bobby” Salcedo aspired to assist as many students as possible to attend college. Through his countless efforts he helped raise thousands of dollars for college scholarships.

Bobby was an employee of the El Monte Union High School District. He started his career as a teacher and was promoted to Assistant Principal of Instruction. He was elected to the Board of the El Monte City School District where he served two terms as president. Bobby himself was enrolled at UCLA where he was only a six months away from completing his Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

On December 31, 2009, while vacationing with his wife, Bobby was abducted and murdered. Authorities in Mexico stated his death was ruled as, “being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Due to Bobby’s relentless efforts to raise scholarship funds, the Bobby Salcedo Memorial Foundation has been created. The Foundation will be hosting a birthday celebration in Bobby’s honor on March 21st. All proceeds will uphold Bobby’s legacy by providing scholarships to college-bound students.

With this in mind, we would like to ask for your help in providing gift cards, services, admission tickets, merchandise goods, etc. for the silent auction portion of the celebration. In appreciation for your patronage we will include your business in the sponsorship section of our program.

BREAKING: Senator Roy Ashburn: "Well, I'm Gay." So, will he be welcomed into the State Legislative Gay Caucus?

With Reports from CBS13.com in Sacramento

"Well, I am gay," said Senator Ashburn on KERN Radio. "Those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long. But I am gay."

So, now that the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, will the California Gay and Lesbian Legislative Caucus welcome him into their club? Or, will he be left outside, in the dark, once again?

The conservative Republican State Senator Ashburn from Bakersfield, confirmed he is gay today less than a week after being arrested for allegedly driving drunk after leaving a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento.

Ashburn made the state this morning to a Bakersfield radio station where he used to host a talk show. "Well, I am gay," said Senator Ashburn on KERN Radio to conservative talk show host Inga Barks. "Those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long. But I am gay."

The 55-year-old father of four said he crossed the line and broke the law, putting people at risk, so he owes the public an explanation.  "The best way to handle that is to be truthful and to say to my constituents and all who care that I am gay," he said. "But I don't think it's something that has affected, nor will it affect, how I do my job."

Ashburn has been on leave since his arrest last Wednesday morning. But according to sources at the capitol, Ashburn was picked up at his home this morning by the Senate's Sergeant at Arms. He is expected to be back at the capitol when the Senate convenes today at 2:00pm. However, he is not at the capitol right now.

The newly rebuilt Los Angeles County Sheriff's Station and Community Safety Center has been "officially" dedicated in a great ceremony on Saturday.

The $6.5 million upgrade, which was funded by the city's redevelopment agency is spectacular and includes 10,000 square feet of additional space.

The location is at the Cerritos Civic Center at 183rd Street and Bloomfield Avenue.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca helped dedicate the new center and he said that the residents of Ceritos are "blessed to live in a city that truly understands the importance of investing in law enforcement."

Sherrif Baca praised local Cerritos Sheriff Captain Joe A. Gonzales and all of the Cerrios Sheriff Deputies and staff and the members of the Cerritos City Council for being "great partners" in helping make Cerritos one of the "safest cities in all of the County of Los Angeles."

CUTTIN DA' RIBBON!

The $6.5 million upgrade, which is funded by the city's redevelopment agency, includes 10,000 square feet of additional space and a remodeling of the facility. Cerritos received a $350,000 federal grant to cover the cost of technological improvements to the 911 dispatch center.
